building a cb500 engine

ok,
so i got the cam chain off, thanks for the manual hook up!!!! very awsome thank you!
ok, so i got a nos 500-605 kit from nipon japan? took the cyl. head and kit to the local shop... they said that the old sleeves have to be pressed out, then the head cylender has to be bored, then the new sleeves presed, then the sleeves have to be bored out then the cylender has to be surfaced... to the tune of about 300 bucks. does that sound right to you guys?
anyway, now what to do, since i have the top end off. should i have the crank ground? the head ported and polished (and what does porting do anyway?) should the valves be reground, do they need new springs....
now the really important thing... what do i do about carbs?? i bought an old set of mikuni carbs from ebay, but they seem to have vacume actuated slides??? any help would be great!

$300.00 sounds about right to me- it's alot of work! You could have the crank balanced- DO NOT GRIND IT. A valve job is a good idea. Porting- which allows more air/fuel in and exhaust gases out-, a hotter cam and springs would really make a difference.

Add to the machining cost and work that you have to strip out the bottom end and have the holes in the top case opened out to accept the new sleeves. Add to the parts list a new cam and primary chain as the primary can wear through the oil galleries and you are doing a 25% capacity increase. Without the porting you will get no real upgrade but if you want a road tractable motot, as against a screemer, stick with the standard cam
