Oil Level Question (CB750K2) Cafe Racer Picture Included
« on: May 10, 2005, 01:29:52 PM »
I had my bike sitting for about 4 weeks while I got the tank, side covers and some other parts painted.  I noticed in that time that the oil level became a bit low (no leaking).  So I added about a quart.  Once I got the parts back, I fired up the bike and after a short ride, I noticed my oil level was very high, (almost overflowing from the resovoir).  Is this normal?  Does the oil settle in the engine case over time?
Thanks as always!  Don't know what I would do without this site!

By the way, here is a picture of my new beauty!

Nice looking bike ;D

The answer is yes. There is a check valve in the oil pump assembly. Sometimes over time the oil will leak past it. I wouldn't worry about it, fairly normal.

You might want to take a syringe, turkey baster, or tube and take out the excess you added though. It has a tendency to blow out overboard.

Mine has this problem also. It's a good idea to check the oil level 'after' you have been riding and just after shutting down the engine when the oil level in the tank will be at it hightest and most accurate. Trust that reading as to wether or not you need to add oil to avoid overfilling.

Thank you for the replies!  I had a bit of a scare.  B/c the overflow hose was sitting right on my rear wheel, and when the over filled resivoir spilled out the hose, it got all over my rear tire, and it slide out from under me!  Lucky, both the bike and I were fine!

The condition is called "wet sumping". You can correct by pulling the oil pan and then the oil pump and replace the stopper valve and spring. It's not very difficult at all.

I tried to get a replacement stopper through my local Honda dealer and ServiceHonda, no luck. If anyone knows of a source, please post it. Thanks.

Thanks for the information.  Is it safe to ride the bike until I can get this problem fixed?  Or should I refrain from running it?

Provided the oil level is correct and the oils not immediately running into the case, Ride it.
