750a oil recomendations
« on: June 13, 2012, 07:05:20 PM »
I did a search here and found nothing on what oil is recomended for the 750a but showed no results but I am sure it has been covered at some time so forgive me for re-asking the questioin.  Is there any recomended oil for the 750a in terms of what the automatic trans likes? or some to stay away from?  Also has anyone put a tach on one from another 750, there doesn't seem to have any "guts" in the tach port on my "a" can one use the drive from another 750?
The trike is coming together real nice now and have rode it a fair amount.  got rid of the frontend shake with 2 stabelizers on the forks.  Looking forward to some nice rides this summer.  I will have updated pictures on my website soon (notn.org) it looks quite different than last pics.  thanks for the help.

I am no 'expert' on these bikes, however I did read somewhere that the cam for the A is different from the other 750s.  With that, I have no idea if the cam has the ablity to drive the cable.

As for the oil, I use Honda oil in all of my bikes; regular Honda 10-40 in the A.  There is some debate about 'car' oil being different, but I have seen good arguments on both sides.

Oil is a "hot button" for some, eliticing charged emotional responses.  And yes - this has been covered before.  I just put cb750 and oil in the search tool, and viola - lot's of hits:

My personal CB750A recommendation - use any oil that is JASO MA2 rated (OK for clutches).

The overall summary:  some are VERY cautious when it comes to protecting their clutches (from slipping), others use ANY oil with no problems.
1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

Tach answer:

The CB750A cams have the gear drive for a tach/cable.

The cylinder head cover is the same as the "K", or non-auto bike.

You will need the cam drive (12431-300-010), a lock washer (90439-300-000), and a bolt (12435-300-003) from a non-auto bike, then all you need is a cable.

We use Yamalube in the bike, it's been well proven for consistent times and stands up well even when loading the converter against the back brake.
