Is it ok to add 1oz of Berryman Chemtool to my gas?  I am concerned about float bowl gaskets swelling up.  My goal is to help thin out old winter gas in the tank and keep tank varnish from flowing down into my carbs.  And no I did not add Stabil or Seafoam.  I will do next time though.

Why mess with it? Just dump out the gas into a 5 gallon bucket and put in you oldest car. You also will flush out some small pieces of rust and dirt. Remember this is free and for nothing but a little time you have fresh gas.

As far as old gas goes, empty your tank and carb bowls and just dump in in the lawnmower and start fresh every spring. It is still cheap enough that it's not worth messing with the problems that old gas causes to your carbs.

On the other hand I use Berryman's in my gas to help keep the carbon from building up in my cylinders. I replaced my head gasket ealier this year for the second time in a year and I was amazed at the amount of carbon build up in just a few hundred miles. I was also amazed at how Berryman's cut through and cleaned the carbon from the piston tops and head cylinder chambers and valves. Pretty much just dissolved it. That's why I use it. Doesn't seem to affect performance just don't over due it.

Anywhere from 87 to 93 depending on how rich I am feeling that day.

Are you guys talking about the one gallon buchet parts cleaner?I have some of this stuff and I only used it once to soak the jets and carb bowls.
If this is the same thing you are talking about, how much should I put in my gas tank?

Lloyd (TwoTired) has done some writing on this subject.  Seems that the octane ratings from the '70s don't quite translate to today's ratings.  Our modern day 87 is closer to what these engines are designed to run on.  I'm no scientist, but apparently unnecessarily high octane gas leads to carbon build up.  I actually feel my bike runs happier on 87 vs. the premium I used to put in.

Greggo,

Thanks for the info!  87 is better for my wallet too.

I usually use 89 medium grade. Maybe I'll try the 87. I thought it might be the ethanol in the fuel. I know it's supposed to burn cleaner but with the crap I've found in my carbs makes me wonder. If the crud can coat my carb bowls and jets what does it do to the cylinders and valves with some heat applied to it?

I think the whole key is to make sure most of your driving is highway so the carbon gets burt up on a regular basis.  From what I have been reading excessive slow speed driving let's carbon build up pretty quick.  All the gas where I am is junk for the most all it all has ethanol.  I think you want to use the lowest octane you so long as your engine sound good with no pings.

I am a seafoam kind of guy.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Me too.  I add a couple splashes to every other tank full.  Does nothing for ethanol, however.

I like seafoam, but sometime I forget that it makes billowing white clouds of smoke and I forget and think something is wrong with my engine.  I think chemtoo, seafoam and stabil all have their place.  I think I might start using a little stabil with a tank or two and see how that goes.

I must not add enough, I do not get the white smoke.  :)

I usually run Shell or Chevron or equivalent.  There is enough detergent to keep things clean.  I can leave the bike sit for over 6 months and not have to clean carbs.  When I use the junk gas, then it only lasts a couple months.  If you ride all the time, then it should stay perty clean with the good gas.  Seafoam a couple times a year.  That has been my experience anyway.

Must be nice to have gas that will last that long!  In NY there is so much corn in the fuel that you pull up to the pump and see Birdseye 10%  and now serving Birdseye dulux 15% corn.
