Can I re use fork seals?
« on: June 19, 2012, 07:15:52 PM »
I'm pretty sure I put them in upside down. They leak a little on both legs but they are new. Also, for future reference, which side goes down?

You'll probably be unable to remove them without damage. Best to get new ones.

The  inner seal is angled and the wider part goes down.  Most of the time the writing (if there is any) will go up ...Larry

All the ones I've ever put in had a spring around the inner diameter that was visible from one side only.  That side always pointed down when installed.

I wouldn't reuse them, once installed either direction.

All the best,

Shane

Mine leak a bit now too , I'm just waiting till there is nothing else to do , then replace them. Not very hard too do ,very labor intensive, presicion work ! ;D I like to completly take my forks apart to clean everything.
Usually , the writing should face up, probably can't reuse, just ride if its not real bad !
Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Fork seals for my bike were all of $15.  You're talking about pulling the fork apart to fix it anyways, so err on the side of caution and just put new ones in.  Print side up.

On a somewhat related note, the purpose of suspension is to keep the tires in contact with the road.  I try keep that system in 100% functional shape.

I know. I just don't wanna wait and pay like $10 shipping on something that weighs as much as a quarter. I'll get new ones.
