They are KO guages, early sandcast are different the drives are sandcast. Probably the originals got crunched and he changed them to some take-offs he found... The early K1.
K1  has a different number on the carbs and maybe a few differences,, but should be 2 cable carbs.
K1 guages are the best , tougher not as fragile, and have the indicators inside them..

lovely bike.  happy birthday/fathers day!  your wife is a keeper, don't trade her.  ;)

show and tell: here's the tank cap on my 750K1 but i don't think it's original to the bike.  the guy who built it told me it came on an earlier model?  pretty cool, i love the simple chain and float gauge.  it works too!

I love this community. Thats why I posted the pics of the internals. Members here can spot the smallest details that can decifer the make.

MarkB also helped me in regard to the origin period. As a member commented, maybe left overs and original to the bike? Is this a possibility? Even the tank has the outline from the gold decal trim left on it. I may even give her a bath to see how clean she can get prior to disassembly. I will check the carbs out tonight. I did pop off the float bowls and they have original brass floats in really good shape too! Not crud all built up!

Thanks once again guys.
In regard to the engine being original, it is. Numbers are only a few different from the frame VIN. There is fin damage to it. I plan to replace that. This is going to be an exciting journey...

Nice Score!...............and that is an early K1..............take a look at the center-stand......is it braced?

I have a rolling chasis K1 with a stuck motor but should be good for parts.

Dumb question but what does a braced center stand look like? This one does need a new fender as this one is cracked. Also, how much for the part below the valver cover but above the cases? Does that sound right?

Nick, Here you go. This was the day I went to look at it last August. I had the seat redone over the Winter and I replaced the tall bars with the stock CB550 ones I had from installing superbike bars on that bike, but otherwise it's just the same.

Wow, super clean. How you liking it? I bet it handles wind gusts better then the 550!

Those fins that are broke is the cylinder head. Should be able to find one. Old scrambler is near Sheboygan maybe he has one. Or you could run it as is until you know for sure the motor is good. In fact, you may want to get it running to be sure there is not some other internal parts you need before you pull it out of the frame to replace the head.

When I did the RR last year I used a small windscreen, which really helped.

The fairing is definitely nice on the highway, but the biggest difference is the overall smoothness of the engine. It's spooky. The first couple times I rode it on the highway I looked down to find myself doing 80 without a clue I was moving that fast. I can see why the GL became the standard for big touring bikes.

I do miss the compact size and lightness of the 550 when riding around town though, and the better gas mileage.

The 1970 model I just bought was built 7/70, frame number 1044665. Engine number 1045089.

Can some of you K0 gurus shed some light on this?

Oh I know. Thats a great question though. Do you have the same gauges on your early K1 too? I am curious, how the heck can I see if this motor runs before I pull it if the wire harness is all hacked up?

Not all wires are needed for the engine to fire.  Do you have a battery in it with an ignition switch?
If yes, see if you have spark?

According to the Honda Guide.........the first K1 will have frame #1044650 and motor #1044806. They were released for sale on September 21st, 1970.

The center stands on the K0 and earliest K1 models are slightly shorter and rock a little more over-center. During the K1 model run a brace was added at an upward angle from the foot-handle to the stand and the height and angle of the stand increased the lift on the rear tire.........also made it a larger task to 'lift' the bike onto the stand.  I had a June, 1970 production K0 that came to me with K1 sidecovers and double-cable carbs but it still had the K0 clocks. It had been run into a ditch and had bent forks and a crashed tank. I sold the entire chasis and in parts but kept the very low mileage motor for a spare.

Tews........I agree with others that you should try to get the motor to run. A head can be sourced but it may need your good internals and a valve-seat grind. If your going to get new pipes......stay with the HM300 type......may may need to sell a lot of parts to get them!

Quick update: I put my battery from my other K1 in and nothing. No power. The electrical is really hacked and I have no skills to figure it out.

Thanks Johnny for the pic on k1 gauges. Those are the ones I have on my other k1.

Here is the center stand on the early k1.
It does seem smaller then the other k1 frames I have.

Another question. Going off the vin numbers it appears I have a K0 frame that was part of the load I got in MN a few weeks ago. I was planning to sell. Should I hold on to? I have a title for it.
