Rim and Tire confusion...
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:35:18 AM »
Hey guys, I have two rims...a 1.85X19 which had a 3.50-19 tire on it, and a 2.15x18 which had a 4.00-18 on it. I would like to put a 110/90-19 and a 120/90-18 on the rims respectively. Will this work? I have looked at all the tire charts via google search and am not sure about the conversions. I am being a cheap bastard and want to buy the tires over the Internet, so no help from the local shop. Any info appreciated. Thanx!

3.50 = 100/90 or 100/80 (shorter tire)
4.0 = 110/90 120/80 could also do a 120/90 for the rear
I would guess 100/90 19 an 110/90 or 120/90 is a pretty common set up, 120/90 should be the biggest to fit a 2.15 wheel IMO anything bigger needs a bigger wheel so it doesnt balloon

First a 110/90 is too big for a 1.85 rim. Per my two charts. personally I had a 110/90 on a 2.15 front rim and its just too much tire for a front. Might as well be a millstone. The 3.50 is the best bet IMO.

The 120 is OK on one chart, too big on the other. Obvioulsy a borderline call.

I guess we should ask why the oversize tires?

Just looking to go the the most economic route more than anything. 110/90-19 and a 120/90-18 seems to be a common setup, but I am not opposed to smaller tires. Thanks for the input!

There is a very interesting discussion here about rims and proper tires to match each other, front as rear. It's about angles of the tires, front and rear must be equal.

Check Towers shart where everything will be clear.

I have run both 110/90 & 100/90 on my front rim. According to the charts,yes,the 110 is too wide. But it rode fine,handled OK and lasted just fine. BUT,when I dropped back down to the 100 on the front handling improved.

If you already had a 110 I would say run it.You'll be fine.If you have to buy one,I'd go with the 100. JMO.
The darn fool didn't know it couldn't be done...so he went ahead and did it anyway.
