Yes I had the Emgo on when we took lefty to Joshua Tree. In May I rode to Santa Cruz and afterwards I decided to go with K&N pods as I felt they were better quality. I love the pods and have had no problem with them. However I also changed the octane of gas (went from 91 to 87) and wonder if that could be the cause of the MPG changing. Those were the only two things I have done differently in the last month. Took it on a spin today and now mileage is at 43mpg....its going in the wrong direction!

I'm going to run it tomorrow and put in 91 again and see if mileage changes. If not then I will have to assume it is the K&N's.

My band has a song about Peter Egan called "Loud Pipes Save Lives" and I have a CB550. That should put me in a spot to make some kind of comment on this thread, but I'm coming up with nothin. Love that guy!

I'm a velocity stacker, not a pod-person, but beware of the stock-boxers!!!

I wouldn't worry about your variations in MPG; it depends on riding conditions. Remember in JT when I only got 40 something MPG, after fighting ferocious winds?

Too bad you didn't get a pic of me nearly getting getting blown over on my side at the stop-light.

The point is, I got over 60 MPG for the first part of the ride, and in the 40's for the next. Last year, on my way home from Kingman, there was a rather fun stretch of road where I may have dipped into the 20's.

Have read on here about folks drilling extra holes in emulsifier tubes to improve mileage. Tempted to try it, but would hate to screw up good carbs. My '75 CB550 gets in the low-to-mid 30s like Egan's. Several times I have found myself on the side of the road removing my tank and sloshing the last few ounces of gas over to the petcock side of the tank. Just part of the charm of riding this old classic

The way I ride, I doubt my mileage would ever be good.

Maybe this is why I do not get the high MPGs as most either. I am always around 5k and up... Went past the redline a few times in the past two weeks as well. Bike really screams at 10500!

Good way to cause damage to a 35+ yr old motor. I normally shift at 7K.

I'd worry more about these 35 year old tachs, these motors are tough...shifting at 7k means you have barely used the fat part of the curve

Just so everyone can rest easy because I know each and every one of you was concerned about my mpg... changing from 89 octane back to 91 octane got me 50mpg. So on 89 I was averaging 42-45mpg and on 91 I am averaging 50-52. I would not have assumed that would be the case but by changing back my mpg is back on track....

Wish I could tell you all the jet sizes and what not but I'm just a girl

and I had Kott Motorcycles fuss around with the carbs when he put on the pods (which I since replaced with better pods). All I know is he does this to all his bikes and he seems to have the internals dialed in.
The carbs are: Keinhin 069A's.

Take a look at both relays. I'm there slowing down all the fellows, making certain their language is one tick below drunken sailor, and riding the prettiest bike around (in my opinion anyway)....
