Rear Sprocket...okay to flip?
« on: June 19, 2012, 07:59:22 PM »
I've been in the process of rebuilding my rear hub with lots of polishing involved and am now trying to decide what to do with this ugly factory sprocket.  Looks to have been coated at the factory (it's steel)?

Anyway, is this thing offset at all? Is it okay to flip it around because one side is definitely more "polish friendly"and it's the side that faced "in" when I took it off.

Do a lot of people just polish these and simply maintenance them?  I can't imagine paint would be very ideal for such a part.

Thanks!

Hi there,

Just for future reference, you'll get much more useful and accurate information if you include what year and model you're working.

On the issue of sprocket symmetry, I'm going to guess that it is symmetrical.  I'm not a 750 guy which your signature suggests that's what you're working.  Pull it off and use the ol' calibrated eyeball, should be pretty easy to tell if it is symmetrical.

However you should be aware that sprockets and chains wear together in all systems that use them so changing one item may prove troublesome, if you're trying to make things nice looking, maybe just replace the shootin match?

Good luck!

Heh, silly me; but you're right: CB750 K4.  I'll see if I can post some pictures tomorrow night as well.

I remember reading here about flipping both sprockets after 4000?? miles for life expectancy.

It's ok to flip as long as the sprocket is symmetrical. I do this every season. Don't flip the chain though.

Sprocket shields can be refinished by painting, chroming and powder coating for a custom look.
