Topic: electronic tach

Hey guys, i just put an electronic ignition on mine. My mechanical tach is way off. When its sitting at a smooth quiet idle, the tach says something like like 1700. I know thats not right it would be sittin there screaming if it was really 1700. the point im getting at is there is a signal wire off the ignition for an electronic tach. Has anyone ever done this? Suggestions for where to find an electronic tach that will suffice?

1700 is not  that fast. For an idle its fast but if your carbs are not synced or your timing is off it could easily be sitting at 1700. Plus its mechanical it telling physically how fast your motor is turning. They are not dead accurate but with ina 100 or so rpm at the lower end. Was the tach off before you went to the dyna?

Its a powerarc, and i had synce the carbs a couple years ago. They have since not been fully disassembled. I took all the bowls off an pulled the jets for a little cleaning, but i never took the whole needle assembly out. The tach never seemed to be accurate before, it NEVER has idled any lower than 1200 and even then it wasnt idling well.

And as far as the timing, ya got me. It revs up beautifully, it winds right out to 8500 with seemingly no issues or flat spots

You can always buy a cheap e tach for a dirt bike to confirm you tech is broken.

Its not that i dont know about it. Its just that if the timing is off then you could have fooled me. Its difficult to recheck it cuz the tdc marks are on the mechanical advancer which was removed. The only way it could be off is if the encoder disc moved during tightening but to the best of my knowledge it didnt
