oil pressure gauge questions.
« on: June 18, 2006, 05:07:48 AM »
when i first start my bike up 750 f1, my gauge jumps straight to 70 p.s.i from cold, after getting warm and running for a while it drops to between 30 and 40 p.s.i.at tickover, when running at steady speed it goes to 70 p.s.i., does this sound ok ? only reason i ask is i am sure it used to take longer to get up to pressure from cold ? , i have just changed my oil and filter (using a spin on filter),and it is exactly the same, oil light works ok and i can see oil circulating in oil tank and i have done about 2 or 300 miles like this , probably just me making something out of nothing  :-\ ,   mick.

I don't know if the pumps changed any in later models, but, considering the gauges may not be the most precise, mine runs something like 10-12 lbs per thousand RPM's depending on the ambient temperature. If it is summer, after warm up it seems to be more like 10 lbs. In cooler weather more like 12 lbs. At idle in hot weather, less than 10 lbs, but I suspect the accuracy is less precise at the low readings, but the oil light does not come on. At temps in the mid to high forties, when I start it, the pressure can be as high as 80 lbs.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

One of the reasons I don't like the spin on mod for these bikes is they replace the stock pressure relief or bypass valve in the Honda oil filter bolt with a plastic one inside the canister.  Some brands have poor quality control and these valves can be defective, inoperative from incorrect installation, blocked by errant assembly glue, etc. and you can't tell since it is inside the canister.
I no longer use the Fram brand of canisters, for this reason, as an example.  But, there are other brands with poor quality control, as well.

Having said that, your reported pressures don't look out of line, and aren't cause for worry.  But, if your pressures are changing along with oil filter changes, you now have a clue as to why.
