I'm a believer of full face-full time but I dont get bothered by the people that dont wear one.  They know the consequenses and have the confidence to ride without.  Its a high risk move with little reward but all you can do is hope they stay safe in their travels.

Am I the only one here that is not buying that scratches on the chin portion of helment do not mean getting your chin ground up? I mean I am talking scratches , NOT ground away portions....

Plastic or fiberglass is harder than your face, plastic scratches, face grinds away.  I came off a pushbike years ago at about 50kph while racing, I was wearing very little protective gear other than a bicycle helmet, I had a mark on my helmet that was ground away about 2cm across, the foam in my helmet was compressed quite heavily at the impact point and fractured all over, but where my skin way exposed it ground away like you wouldn't believe, after I hit the ground I travelled about 30ft sliding across the road, my left elbow was ground to the bone, my left hip and arse cheek was severely gravel rashed along with half my back and left leg.  With the impact that I took to my head, if it hadn't been for the helmet I'm sure it would have turned out a lot worse, and if the speed was higher I would hate to think what the damage would have been.

754,

The picture I posted in Reply #13 was a result of the front end  of a motorcycle suddenly giving way on a rural pave highway.  The motorcycle was not a Honda.  The point of impact was just above the visor.  If you zoom in on the picture you can see the point of impact (white area).  He then slid down the asphalt on his face, thus all the scratches on the visor.  He had a large goose egg on his head at the point of impact, and around his eyes were black like a racoon eyes.  Without the full face I am of the opinion his face would have been ground up a tad.

I have contacted the road with my face, at 15-20 mph, in fact I hit so hard my feet came way off the ground..
, heels caught then I  That was starting out from landing in sitting position, then rotating to hit with my face and slide along the pavement.
Results were not as bad as some would predict, considering I was not wearing a helmet..

Lifted this from Center for Disease Control website.

Smoking is also a major contributor to many chronic diseases that are driving up the nation's health care costs. Each year, diseases caused by cigarette smoking result in $96 billion in health care costs, much of which is paid by taxpayers through publicly-funded health programs.

According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive alcohol consumption costs taxpayers $223.5 billion in 2006.

 From the DOT

The Department of Transportation (DOT) estimates that the yearly taxpayer cost for injuries directly attributed to non-helmet wearing motorcyclists is over $900 million.  So nation-wide, the annual cost to taxpayers approaches $1 billion.

So before anyone starts pissing and moaning about having to pick up the tab for not wearing a helmet....better look in the mirror and put out that cig and stop the excessive consumption of alcohol.
Or maybe we ban cigs and alcohol altogether.

There are plenty of valid arguments for wearing a helmet but the taxpayer cost angle is pretty weak.

Just saying.....

Just because one evil is lesser than another does not mean it’s not a problem.

It would be interesting to see how they come up with these statistics, but with a couple hundred million Americans consuming alcohol the financial impact is sure to be hundreds if not thousands of times greater than financial implications imposed on society by the much smaller number of stupid motorcyclists that choose to not wear helmets.

The life expectance of alcoholic’s vs unprotected motorcyclists is also vastly different. Alcoholics can and probably will out live their brain damaged motorcycling counterparts, costing the state significantly more in the long run and the 1 billion dollar cost is distributed to the motorcyclist by way of higher insurance costs. That’s something I don’t personally wish to pay extra for.

You're working with skewed data, Frank.  If the face in question is already seriously messed up to begin with, it's difficult to quantify the amount of damage. ;D ;)

I've worked in health care for a little while. From what I've experienced I don't think the worst part is dying (as long as you have life insurance for your loved ones).

The worst outcome, besides the genuine possibility of doing some lasting damage to your physical features or limiting your activities of daily living, would be living as a vegetable for the rest of your life, and/or having a TBI as a very close second. There are plenty of injuries one can live from for a long long time that will severely downgrade quality of life. I don't mean just not able to ride a motorcycle- I'm talking about not being able to figure out how to tie your shoes anymore.

Sipping through a straw is no problem compared to living in an adult diaper.
