I used a a 1/4" cold chisel and hammer to get the stuck and rounded off filter housing bolt off of my 550. The flange on the bolt head is more than large enough so you shouldn't damage the housing.

You can get a replacement bolt with a larger head on ebay. When you change the filter just keep in mind that the bolt does not have to be extremely tight.

Bad idea to use evaporust and not full the whole tank with it!! It works well for what was submerged under the fluid. But anything higher than the fluid got worse. I'm gunna buy 2 more containers of that stuff tomorrow and put it in the tank.

Fill the tank with white vinager and some water. I use 2 gallons of vinegar and water in the rest of it, right to the top of the tanks fill hole. Give it 24 hours dump and rinse it out. It will work wonders on the top of the tank.

So we got a replacement battery, put acid in it. Charged it on a trickle charger. Then my friend put it in the bike and it started to burn the wires. :(

He just called me and told me this. Then sent pics. The coating on some are bad but .... Not what I wanted to hear. After comparing pics of the original battery to what I bought the mounts are switched, positive/ negative, so you have put the battery in the opposite way.

I will post pics later tonight.

Wow! Quick response.
Ya, I left it at his house and I'm headed to florida tomorrow for a week. He has a truck and a trailer, and a lot of tools. So when I got it he helped me pick it up. I thought leaving it there he might have it up and Atleast running by the time I get back. Now this...

:( shrug

Maybe he can change the wire harness and rectifier by the time you get back from FL?!

But if he can't be trusted to put the battery in, maybe not.

Pretty hard to put the battery in backwards as the cables won't reach. If the cables hooked up without rerouting them, then its the wrong battery, poles reversed. Are the terminals on the left side of bike? If so, its not in backwards, its the wrong battery.

Sorry though, damage done.

Thats the wrong bat. takes a double take...

Wow that is weird. Terminals sb on left side, pos rear, neg front. Likethe old bat.

If you put that bat in terminals on left side, the terminals are reversed! Is it just me?

Let us see the numbers on the new bat with the red tops.

Pardon my scientific vocab but look at all the white crap in the cells, that bats toast.

Ya the white crap is from the old battery. I don't even think I can exchange the battery now. Because by the time I get home from FL it might be past the return period

Man I really feel bad for you. That is terrible. I would be sick if that happened. I just can not understand it. I mean, that is basic mechanics to connect positive to positive and negative to negative. I don't get how someone can do that unless they are just not paying attention at all. You can easily see the negative bolted to the frame. Your friend suddenly created a lot of work...for someone. You can find a new harness, just takes time to properly connect it up again. Good luck and keep us posted.

I see now, the atomic YB14 IS NOT the right battery, sb 12n14-3a.  same amp hours but the other numbers designate where the polarity is.

I got cornfused with the multtiple pics, but its all clear.  All those parts are replaceable, i just bot new subharnesses for mine, not too bad. new (used) reg and rectumfriar available for a song. I'll donate some used pieces if I can. Let me know.

I may have missed it but did a store tell you that was the proper battery?
If so, bring pics and go bonkers at store! They may pay for new wire harness and work needed to correct the mishap

Did the same thing to my bike's harness. Blew a main fuse, and use a house key to try getting home. Worked for the first mile, then the key rattled loose and shorted on the frame. Stupid, I know, but I didn't feel like pushing my bike uphill for almost two miles.

I'm not sure because I wasn't there when he did this. But that is a good point as to how it should have popped a fuse first. But again it is out first time even seeing it so there could be another issue that allowed it to get that far.

Ah, well, "they" were wrong. Sorry.

AS i mentioned, and may be a good learning point for others, the 12 stands for 12v (duh), the 14 is amp hours, and the 3A is polarity. Of course other brands may have other codes, but most use the Yuasa codes of 12n14-3a. I'm pretty sure thats a yuasa based code system.
