Metzeler Lasertec Tire Question
« on: January 13, 2012, 06:02:09 PM »
I want to keep the original tire sizes on my new (to me) 1978 Honda CB750F and was about to pull the pin on a set of Metzeler Lasertec tires as follows:

3.25X19 - front
4.00X18 - rear

...when it dawned on me that these were the sizes for my 1976 Honda CB750K... out to the garage with the flashlight and sure enough, the tires (circa 1987) on the CB750F are Avons:

100/90X19 - front
120/90X18 - rear

a) What were the original tire sizes on the F?
b) What do folks think of the Metzler tires which I thought were cool because they came in the old imperial sizes?
c) Did Honda move to metric sizes at some point in the 70's? Or when?

For you Canucks, the prices are:

 Metzler Lasertec 3.25 X 19 - $104.95
 Metzler Lasertec 4.00 X 18 - $124.95

I thought these were pretty good prices, shipped from Quebec to Saskatchewan.

Most US stores won't ship to the frozen north and if they do, UPS gouges us.

I have these on my 77CB750F, except the rear is a an ME77.  I like them. But, I've tried no other brand on that particular bike.  The 550s now get Metzelers too, after years of trying other brands and metric sizes the shop had on hand.  Now, I order the correct sizes for the bike, and find they work very well and keep the original neutral handling without fighting the bars.  No more metric substitutions for me.  You do need tubes for them, though.  Stock rims won't bead lock with tubeless tires, even if you do get them to hold air.

The owners manual lists what you have ^^^.  ;D

Here's another alternative, some Dunlop K70's in the old imperial sizes available in Canada, his prices are not bad either, pretty competitive with Pete's Superbikes in QC.

I decided to go with the Metzler Lasertec tires.

Is there concensus on running these in Comstar rims from 1978 without tubes?

Hi there,

I know this an old thread but if you see this, where did you order the Metzeler Lasertec's from in Quebec?  I'm in Alberta and was thinking of those for my 74 CB550.  Trying to decide between Contis, Bridgestones, or Avons as well.

Just bought this bike from Saskatoon actually.

Thanks

If you're in Canada, I got the Metzler Lasertec's's (3.25X19 & 4.00X18) from Pete's in Quebec, both tires delivered to Saskatchewan for $229.90. These tires are proper "period correct" non-metric sizes that appeal to me for a variety of reasons. www.petes-superbike.com

Good to hear from another SOHC rider close by...
