What kinda jacket and helmet do you use?
« on: June 24, 2012, 09:11:58 AM »
Just curious what you guys rock while riding? Ive been riding street bikes for years and have all kinds of riding gear but I feel like I need to change it up now that I'm riding a vintage bike. I've been following this forum for a while but have never seen a thread about riding gear. Please let's see those pics of awesome jackets and helmets! Thanx in advance

I don't dress special for what I ride. The same as always. Black leather jacket and full-face lid. As in my avatar.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Mesh jacket in the summer; leather in the winter. Jeans, boots, and a 3/4 helmet with face-shield.

I had a replica of the Belstaff Panther jacket made from a seller on eBay UK called The Tannery. $300 odd dollars delivered, custom fitted, extra thick hide. Could not be happier with it!

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=51957.msg843151#msg843151

As for gloves, I've got a pair of "Paratrooper" gloves (Glove, Riding, Horsehide, Unlined, M1942) and had a friend re-enforce the strap and stress points in the thumb and finger web areas.

Boots, I got a pair of 1943 'two buckle' combat service boots. The two buckle gator is a bit much, but I can slip my jeans over it if I want to be a little more low key. However, my CB400F has a head gasket leak that sprays oil down the left side of the bike, the gator actually comes in very handy! The boots aren't a steel cap or anything like that, just a sturdy leather boot.

I got both the boots and gloves from At The Front.

Helmet, I got a Bell R/T (which is just the Custom 500 but with premium materials) from the UK because it has brown leather liner. Unbeknownst to me, no of the US Bell Custom 500 face shields fit my Bell helmet. I seems the euro version I have is a weird derivative.

Pants, I just ride with my regular raw selvedge denim jeans. Mates of mine ride with those Deth Killer kevlar jeans and love them, so maybe I'll get a pair.

There's some more photos in my project thread here:

I have a mesh Icon jacket, and a Shoei RF-1100 helmet. Best helmet I've ever had. Great fit for my head, quiet as hell, even on our unfaired sohcs. Gloves are Alpinestars SMX-2 Air Carbon. Boots are pretty badass, Icon 1000 Elsinores (http://www.jafrum.com/Icon1000ElsinoreBootBlack.jpg).

I wear the kind of helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, and sometimes armored riding pants that will protect me well in a wreck but still be relatively comfortable for the ride.  I wouldn't suggest basing your protective gear purchasing decisions on what others who ride similar bikes look like.

+1 with Gordon.   Don't wear the uniform rock what you got!
For me that's Fulmer "Visigoth" fullface, Rocket armored textile,Carharrts, summer gloves and combat boots.  If you gear up according to style your going about it the wrong way.

I use an HJC IS-16. It ventilates really well and has a built in sunshade which is pretty cool. It's a tad loud but not nearly as loud obviously as my half helmet.

Jacket...dont usually wear one unless it's cold. Then i wear a black Carhart Arctic coat. Cuts the wind really well and it's warm!

Gloves:
ICON Twenty Niner

Helmet:
HJC CL-15 Full Face Flat Black Helmet.

It has a couple vents and gets the job done.  Honestly I like it a lot, but I have nothing to compare it to.  I am thinking of getting an offset white stripe painted on it (someone posted a few photos of "cafe" helmets and I saw a flat black full face that had an offset stripe and I thought it looked really good) but that is just one of those expenses I can't justify until I get my bike in better operating shape.

I can't bring myself to get a 3/4 helmet or bucket.  I bought the first season of the Cafe Racer build show (I know I know) and one of the two "professional" riders wore a 3/4 helmet with what appeared to be designer sunglasses.  I could not believe what I was seeing.  How any motorcycle "professional" could ride without proper eye protection is truly bothersome.

Jacket:
Some generic gray leather thing right now.  I did order a 60s Brimaco leather jacket that is beautiful and will become my primary jacket.  If I find it to be too hot I am going to head to my local dealer and try to find something ventilated.

Boots:
I have a pair of leather harness boots.  I forget the brand.  But they are thick leather and I know the aesthetic is more on a guy that rides a cruiser but I really have no interest in getting my foot ground off.

I have also been guilty of riding with a pair of chuck high tops... I felt like a SQUID doing that though.

Pants:
I generally wear a good pair of levis.  I have my doubts about how well they will protect me in a fall and I need to do my research on that still and see what options are available to me.

Rain Protection:
None.  I road in the rain in my standard gear once and the bike misfired constantly.  Until I get my points cover gasket/seal replaced this weekend I won't be attempting that again so I just have no need for that.

Without intending to hijack, I do have a related question to those who have been around motorcycling longer than I...

Are any armored jackets comfortable!? I have a mesh one currently and it feels like I am suiting up for a hockey game. Very bulky and restrictive to my range of motion.

I can't remember the brand off the top of my head right now, but I am looking for some other takes on this matter.

i don't personally own one, but a buddy of mine loves them.  i borrowed one of his for about a week and it was pretty comfortable - leather with plastic plates, but he already had it broken in pretty well.

per the topic, i have a classic leather motorcycle jacket that i sometimes wear, and i have a lightweight wool jacket with a more modern racing cut that i like better.

my lid is a Scorpion EXO-100 with a flip-down visor.

I'm pretty bad about wearing my lid or my jacket, but if it's chilly i wear the jacket, and i always wear my lid at night for some reason.  apparently i'm invincible during the day...  ??? other than that it's tank boots and jeans for my lower half no matter what.

All my armour jackets are super comfortable! The Weiss leather jacket and rev it union jackets fit like a glove and have good protection. You are welcome to come round and try them.
