What's America got against the French, didn't they help the "Founding Fathers" fight the British in the war of Independance? And where would America be without it's national dish, French Fries?

I mean, what would the dude at the burger joint say if it wasn't for the French helping Americans win their independance, "Do you want Crisps with that, Guv'nor?" Cheers, Terry. ;D

Nope, we Yanks take action:

Freedom fries is a political euphemism for French fries used by some people in the United States as a result of anti-French sentiment during the controversy over the U.S. decision to launch the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

On March 11, 2003, Representatives Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio) and Walter B. Jones, Jr. (R-North Carolina) declared that all references to French fries and French toast on the menus of the restaurants and snack bars run by the House of Representatives would be removed. House cafeterias were ordered to rename French fries "freedom fries". This action was carried out without a congressional vote, under the authority of Ney's position as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, which oversees restaurant operations for the chamber. The simultaneous renaming of French toast to "freedom toast" attracted less attention.

The Embassy of France in Washington, D.C. made no comment beyond pointing out that French fries come from Belgium. "We are at a very serious moment dealing with very serious issues and we are not focusing on the name you give to potatoes."

For a few weeks Freedom Fries signs were all over the place. Then they mostly disappeared.

My Mum had never liked the French, well maybe not never.  Just since they surrendered.  So, if Mum did not like them, I won't either.

I guess Bobby that it points out that politicians can be silly asses no matter were they come from or what political  beliefs they subscribe too, I'm also reasonably sure that Terry has political idiots running around in Oz, I know we've got a prize bunch here, maybe we on the forum should hold a contest to see who has the dopiest servants of the people ( seeing most countries are represented ) and the winner gets to send the politician of that country a paper medal signed by every one on the forum to show that yes there are people watching and yes the world knows what a fool they are.

I have often wondered if the french were trying to help us or just stick it to the british. Maybe both?

From my perspective the main thought behind France's moves were always, stick it to the Brits, you were just a bit of moral suasion for the rest of the world to swallow, remember this started  during the Napoleonic wars and why not have your enemy fight on two fronts.

Vegemite is the Australian national spread mate, for sure. Folks probably think Kangaroo or Emu would feature strongly in our national dish (which it probably did before white men set foot on this land) but Roast Lamb is probably the most commonly eaten dish, followed by barbecued anything. Here's a clip of Australia's Prime Minister, Sam Kekovich, espousing the tradition and benefits of a lamb diet. Cheers, Terry. ;D
