Honda 400/4 cam R6???? Maker?
« on: June 23, 2012, 12:23:48 PM »
Hi

Just had a peek at the engine I brought. The cam is marked R6.
No other markings.
Any ideas?
Bike runs well,  to about 9000 revs. When you change down it has engine braking but if the revs drop below 5500 it bogs a bit & takes a while to pick up. Between 7 & 9 it picks up & fly's. Through the gears it revs out to 9 in each gear, really well. Found I need to run it like a 2 stroke, change down, dump the clutch & keep it around 6 & a bit & it picks up fine. Lots of grin factor. ;D

Thanks
all the best Chris

That's exactly how I feel I have to ride my mostly stock CB400F. I've got a NOS cam in it too so I'd be interested to know what the R6 means. I'm running rebuilt stock carbs, stock headers with an after market pea shooter muffler.

I hate that bogging at lower RPM, without it I just know I could beat my mates BMW r75/7 in a drag race!

In all likelihood unless there are other identifying marks say on the end etc what you have is a HONDA cam. Those markings mean nothing to us. This is old conversation that goes way back.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I agree, R6/R5 etc don't mean anything. Power 7-9k indicates a stock cam too, however the simplest other check is to measure the lobes - a good rule of thumb is that if they are under 29mm across then it is probably a stock cam ( they tend to be around 28.5mm but they do vary, they even vary from lobe to lobe too).

Hi
Thanks for the reply's so far.
I dont intend stripping the engine down this season. Too inclined to rebuild it completely, if I did.
Could well be a stock cam, daft as I could have measured it quite easily! ::)
Hopefully I can get it out for another run soon.

all the best Chris
