UPDATE!*550 Dies while riding, DANGEROUS
« on: June 24, 2012, 10:31:10 AM »
I left the headlight switch ON with the ignition in the off position and the key out over night. So I turned off the headlight switch and left it alone for about 15 min, came back and nothing. I pulled out the fuses one by one to check if they were blown and they weren't. When I put the fuses back in the clips and turned the key the instrument lights came on like nothing was ever wrong. So I kicked it and it fired up, rode it down the rode a little bit and DEAD. no blown fuses, no dead battery ??? ??? ???

Everythings stock, but I don't have an elecric start due to PO butchering it. When fixing his job, I decided to do away with it completely and leave only kick start. Its had the same brand new battey in it for a little over a month and has yet to do this but I rode it for the first time yesterday. Maybe riding it has something to do with it. I'm not very smart with the electrical so explain it to me like I'm 5.

Thanks

you might have turned the key to the park position instead of off which in park allows your tail light just to operate.
on or start is centered in the switch off rotates to front and the parked light rotates to the rear of the bike, your bike might have in instrument cluster mounting but the switch might still work on this principal.

Try cleaning up the tangs of the fuse holder. If it still persists, check for grounding issues.

Try cleaning up the tangs of the fuse holder. If it still persists, check for grounding issues.

If the fuse box is nice and hot only a short while after turning the headlight on, this is likely the culprit.  You can clean these up really nice by wrapping a small piece of 400 grit sandpaper around the end of a fuse and using it to remove corrosion from the fuse holders.  Spray it down with electric contact cleaner after you're done (deOxit is best), and you should immediately see a temperature difference. If the fuse box is right, it will not get hot.

Well Im pretty sure the key was turned completely off(counter clockwise) but the more I keep reading I think it may be corrosion in the ignition wiring. I'll clean all the fuse clips when I get a chance to replace the fuses, and check the back of the block to make sure nothings lose or corroded. I dont know if I mentioned that when trying to start the bike, I pulled the fuses for a second and popped em back in, turned the key, and boom but it died in mid ride. Just making sure there's plenty of info.

Thanks for the help
