What are these bikes worth these days?
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:40:49 AM »
Let me first say my 350F is NOT for sale so I am just trying to get edumacated! The F models that is! I have seen and heard so much BS and stuff that I consider accurate and was wondering for when the inevitable question arises. Lets approach this answer in a structured way and say there are five major categories

TOTALLY cherry survivor needing NOTHING

Same but restored with NOS or original parts

Nice survivor with all original parts but has "road patina" but NO damage. Even a little surface rust acceptable.

OK shape, can be put back to the third alternative cheaply and is a rider but not cherry by any means.

RAT or basket case.

Now for the models by size,

CB750F

CB500F (550 too!)

CB350F

CB400F since I kind think they are worth more than the 350F for some odd reasoning!

I'll say that I just sold a totally cherry near showroom BMW R60/5 for about twice what other BMW /5 owners told me it was worth. I sold it to a guy in NYC and he and 9 other people were flat chomping at the bit to buy it AT the asking price or $6000.00 when everyone one on the BMW boards were telling me it was worth tops of $3500.00! Of course most of them wanted to buy it from me for the ridiculous price of 3500!

what about the 750K's  :o way more of them than any others.  ::)

just giving you a hard time because i know you mean Four as in 750Four, 550Four, etc...

bought my (runner/titled)350F for $1000(9000mi)  Sold it for $2500 2 years later(11600mi) The guy got a deal.
The only things non-OEM were the paint(professionally painted white) and 2 into 1 Jardines on each side.
OEM exhausts would have put it in the CHERRY category.
I did nothing to the engine, frame, exhaust or paint.  the rest was cleaning and typical maintenance stuff.

it really comes down to what someone is willing to pay...

Bought it for 200 bux...........................1974 CB350F1

Runs.....and clear title.........................

2800 original miles.....still original factory tires and probably factory air still in the tires. Cracked some but don't leak.

Exhaust rusted through so PO cut them off.

My only plans are to repaint it, my wife's choice of color, new tires, exhaust, and ride the sheeeeeeeeeet out of it.

Budlite, you got a stupid sweet deal on that!! I think people look down their nose at the small displacement and figure if it is more cc's it should get more money and maybe they aren't aware of what they have. Nice find! And I am super jealous! Mine was a basket case (well partially) and I paid $400. Wanted one so bad, I just crossed my fingers on his word that it ran and it does (luckily). I originally wanted the twin, but thought how cool it was that there were four cylinders with such small displacement :) I think I was also just excited that it had a title, which also makes a price difference if you ask me. She's not a looker, but I know what I have in it and I wouldn't go under $1200 (for a non cherry!) I think if someone wants the bike to go to someone who will TRULY appreciate it makes a difference in what they take for it as well. If all these old timers would quit hogging up all their stock, maybe there would be some better deals out there! ;)

seeing as how these bikes dont fit in flat rate USPS box's, the location has a bit of an impact on the price.  Bikes in metropolitan areas getting a significant premium over those out in those in between places.

I do know a lot about locale because when I posted my BMW here in New Mexico for 5K I got NO CALLS. An HOUR after posting it on the San Francisco and NYC criagslist, I got the calls that led to it's sale for $6000.00. I will also say that on vintage bikes, it makes a LOT of difference when it has been repainted unless that repaint is THE stock colour, AND has the correct decals. I am going to repaint my CB350F in stock colour, and replace the stock decals whic I already found NOS. This kind of stuff REALLY adds to the value I have found. I got a 1969 CL350 with 8K original miles on it which was cherry for $600.00, but after refinishing the tank and side covers back the the stock red/white I get offers of up to 3K for it.....major difference.

The bike was actually given to my brother, from our family doctor at the time in Delaware. My brither was painting his house.

He didn't do anything with it, so I offered him 200 bux and headed back to Georgia. Where it now sits in my garage.........waiting for paint. I still have the Delaware tag and title.

Haven't tagged it in Ga. yet.

Would love to put original pipes on it.....but money just ain't there, and won't be.

So, I'm hunting for a good set of 4 into 2 to put on it, something quiet, cause my wife wants to ride it.

I'd do one of those MAC 4 inot one pipes since it'll be a tad lighter and probably easier to jet. PLus they are under 250 total if you look. Or mithg even find a good used set here after someone took them off after finding a good stock set or something.

I paid $1300 for two 550's.

One (1977 with 22K) in stock condition; I'd say the "Nice Survivor with Patina" category.
The other (1978 with ?) in the "Basket Case" category. I have almost all of the stock parts for this bike in boxes.

Those 350's are smoking hot though. Nice bikes!

good to know, probobly one of the only things we can do to our bikes that have a higher return then investment. Thanks for sharing.

Over the years since I began riding, which was in 1972, I have learned the following which all helps the sale, then of course, the use of sale funds to buy a different vintage bike! Because all of us here basically do that don't we?

Save all or get all paperwork you can for the bike you want to sell or even keep, in the long run, there is never too much vintage stuff to have With the bike! Especially Adverts and such. Documentation of repairs, or aftermarket goods.

Having or leaving the paint stock, as opposed to a NON standard colour INCREASES the value!

Leaving all the stock stickers and graphics, see above.

As all should know, aftermarket parts decrease the value, unless you have the stock parts and in reality, you should always change everything back to stock before attempting to sell the bike. UNLESS it is a HIGHLY modded bike with period parts!

Get the bike as clean as possible, even to the point of replacing parts before an attempt to sell. 300 dollars spent on new turn signal lenses, fenders that have no surface rust and all those little bits return MUCH more on a sale. As long as they are NOS or original parts.

try to not use repop parts unless they are quality repops then Never represent them as anything BUT a re manufactured or repop part. You will get busted by a savy buyer then you have a bad rep.

Detail the bike as well as it can be, never leave oil grime or anything on it for the pics of the sale or during a viewing. A little old oil residue can kill money off a sale.

Make sure the seat is in as good condition as possible, even with a repop cover, it has better resale value even if the paint has patina the seat should look excellent.

That is about it for now till I remember more, and of course make sure it runs perfectly!

this is all for those who want a good bike to look great, or a great one look flawless. Believe me, many over look even these things, or never think of them and therefore, don't make as much as they should on a vintage bike sale.

To tell the truth, I am glad my CB350F has patina because I am not going to sell it. I am going to ride it so would not ride it as much if it was perfect. Now if I were trying to sell it I would want it perfect and with about 500 clams could easily do that!

NADA lists the CB3450F in excellent change st $1495 in a Phoenix zip code. What!?

Mine was not a runner, but clean (plus patina) for $300. She runs now, with emissions issues :)

Cleaner now, and running. All stock, and I intend to keep her that way save for dyna ignition.

So, I'm hunting for a good set of 4 into 2 to put on it, something quiet, cause my wife wants to ride it.

I used some Emgo Dunstall replica mufflers and made some custom 2-into-1 collector pipes with 1.375" exhaust pipe. Relatively inexpensive (really just the cost of the mufflers and the exhaust pipe stock, about $150 total IIRC), runs really well, and sounds nice. Quiet but a nice exhaust note as well.

Pics of it available at http://www.andywaddell.com/cb350f.htm
Nothing really close-up of the exhaust, but you can get a feel for it.

Blue books mean absolutely NOTHING on the same price of a vehicle considered to be a collector or vintage. I have an example, a buddy who didn't know what he had wanted to sell the totally cherry BMW R90S he had that his Dad bought brand new, rode about 2300 miles, and just started it and ran it around the block for the next twelve years! He got it from his dad and never rode it much except for the round the block thing once a week for the ten years he had it. He asked me what he should sell it for because NADA said it was worth in the 2300 dollar range. I sold it for him for $13,550.00.

I would say you are nowhere near, but in reality you are only missing one zero.  Here is a copy of the origional ad.

Date Listed:    18/03/2012
Last Edited:    18/03/2012
Price:
$3,000.00
Address:    Morayfield QLD
For Sale By:    Owner
Displacement (cc):    350
Year:    1972
Motorcycle Make:    Honda

Suit restoration. Bike is complete. Will run.

I emailed the guy and offered him what it was worth, but didn't get a reply but he did drop the price to $2000, then only a couple of days later it was sold.  So I'm guessing that some fool shelled out for it.

On that Cb350 that sold for 2k, that reminds me of two things, one is there is SOMEONE out there willing to pay a lot for these vintage bikes. Two, some of those people are foolish with their money and need to look round a bit more before shelling out their hard earned money. I will say that IF I was trying to sell my CB350F, which: runs as if new, fires up firs touch of the button every time, has new tyres, is all stock including the pipes, has a new NOS seat cover, and all new brakes and fluids, and would be like new with a fresh refinish and 20hrs of hand detailing and maybe a new front fender, I would ask in the $3500.00 range and get it......EASY! I know this only because after everyone told me I would never get $5000.00 for my BMW R60/5, I got 7K, after everyone told me I would never get $4000.00 for my R100RS I traded it for this 350 AND a nice 1985 R80RT BMW, the two together are easily worth about 6K. If a bike is NICE, vintage and all stock, it WILL sell for a lot of money! Shoot, look at the prices of super cherry CB750K0 or K1S And if you dare, try to but a cherry 1970 Kawasaki trippple two storke! God! Those sell for over 10K easily!
