battery terminal extenders?
« on: June 26, 2012, 12:34:07 PM »
OK, so i have to keep my 550 on the charger pretty much constantly because i do a lot of night riding.  so every night i pull of my delicate (already cracked and repaired) side cover to connect the trickle charger.

Has anyone created some kind of mod to be able to hook up the charger without removing the side cover (aside from moving the battery box?) ?

Any ideas would be appreciated/interesting.

Many of the small maintainers have a wiring plug that hooks to the battery and then part stays on the bike permanantly. Plugs in under the seat or you can hang it where ever you want to.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Sure. In the electric clothing world, you would have a pigtail hanging out to plug your vest into. These pigtails have connectors which go right in to most Battery Tender brand chargers.

But even without that you can do the same thing yourself. Visit Battery Tenders site or an Electric Clothing sight and put the pieces together. You'll have a 12-14" pigtail coming off the battery. And the mate would be attached to your charger.

On my bikes the pigtail tucks cleanly away behind a side cover, within reach for either the charger or the vest.

Very convenient.

My trickler came with a pigtail like that. Two prong plug similar to the one for trailer with a cover on it to be mounted on the battery.
My battery has 4 contacts and this pigtail is fixed to one side.

OK, cool !   Thanks, fellas - I've never seen one before, but i'll look around.  My charger is just a Wally-Mart special and came with no whistles and bells.  Buying a new one which has this attachment is something I'll gladly do.

Sounds like you don't mind, you can just cut the alligators off the existing one and splice the charger side pigtail in. Or get real ambitious and splice in some quick disconnect plugs to plug in either the pigtail for your bike or plug back in the alligator clips.

Some chargers are very sensitive . If you add on wire to the battery even if it is the correct size, sometimes the charger will not work.

the charger i have now is  actually pretty good - it's a 2/4/6A charger with neat little lights and stuff.  since i can use it for my car too, i want to leave it in tact.  besides, the alligators on it have less grip than most newborns, so i think they'd just fall off while riding lol.

I'll just buy the right tool for the job this time :)
