CB400F Gear Linkage and Brake pedal (1977 Canada model)
« on: June 26, 2012, 04:17:03 PM »
Hi,

I have the opportunity to buy a 1977 CB400F Canadian spec.  When I went to take a look at the bike I noticed the rider foot rests (foot pegs) are much further forward than my UK CB400F model (1977) also the gear linkage is gone and replaced with a single lever and short brake pedal are replaced with long brake pedal.  In addition the fuel tank does not have the nice chrome filler cap and is missing a front stay from the front fender.

The question I have is: Can the Canadian spec 1977 model easily be converted back to origianl foot peg positions if i was able to obtain the parts .. OR... is the conversion more difficult than i imagine?  i.e it requires more than just 1976 / UK spec foot pegas and gear linkage.

cheers

Alan

I believe the differences that you note were characteristic of all the 1977 models, which were changed from the previous year.

In one case you reference and make comparison to the 1977 UK model and in the second paragraph you seem to reference it as a 1976 UK model.

Presumably the Canada 77 model is the same as the US 77 one- the ultra-rare version with taller bars as well as the footrests and tank changes that you describe. The UK and Euro 77 one was indeed different in those respects.

You can change back the footrests to the UK type (you'll need all the footrest brackets as well), the gear linkage too, and the brake pedal, but you need to also change the brake lever pivot shaft (the bit that goes through the frame) as the splines are different.

Sorry for late reply.

OK sounds like I can get the bike back to a Euro/1976USA/Canada spec foot peg set up.

thanks

I just sold a 77 400F.  I bought it from the original owner who purchased the bike in Grande Prairie Alberta.  I think that the bike you describe is in fact a stock 77, not sure if there was any difference in Canadian and US models.  They did have higher bars, one piece shifter, forward set foot pegs and a different rear brake lever.  I used the parts from a 75-76 400F on the 77 bike with no problem.
The stock 77 pieces mentioned are rarer than the 75-76 stuff.  Don't throw them out!
I don't want it to go like a motorcycle, I want it to go like a rocket!
