Powder Coating
« on: June 26, 2012, 07:05:43 PM »
What is a reasonable cost to budget for powder coating a CB750 frame, swing arm, kick stand, center stand, etc. with little to no rust?

I paid about $400 for all that and a set of rims.

$250 including blasting. I got a black gloss coat with a clear coat on top. Oil tank, triple trees, rear caliper, headlight mount too. Everything. Money well spent when you see the results.

I stripped the paint off of my frame and did some scraping and cleaning before taking it to the powder coater. I think it saved me some money, because it made it easier for them to blast.

Gotcha with power coating: hard to chip, but if it does, you cannot just touch it up like a regular paint job.

I got my frame and swingarm sandblasted and painted for nothing.  My old man is an industrial spray painter and powdercoater.  He used a catylised acrylic on the frame, it is a paint they use on the undercarriage of trains, he also gave it a coat of anti grafitti clear, it brought the frame up a million bucks.  So far, 15 months and 6000km on it and there are no stone chips on the frame, it also has the benefit that it is self etching to itself ie. if you do chip it or scratch it, you can touch it up without having to reprime, just paint over the origional paint.

My CB750 hard tail bobber cost $245 to powdercoat, including foot pegs, foot peg mounts, battery box, battery hold down bar and Santee electric box lid. I was told not to sand blast it beforehand, because he sand blasts everything before powdercoating for quality control.
