I was too late :(
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:41:44 PM »
Riding home from work I saw a turtle on the road, but when I turned and stopped to move it to safety it was already crushed :(

Feeling down, would you believe it?  Bambi killer like me?

I found this turtle in the middle of the road I live on, right where it joins the highway, it was litterally 10' away from heavy traffic.  I took him for a drive out to our local wier, well away from any major roads, on the way there only 150 metres up the road I found his mate squashed in the middle of the highway.  :(

i was driving up M33 last weekend, following a semi trailer.   suddenly in front of me i see a spot scooting across the road - somehow a turtle had made it across the 2-lane highway with pretty heavy traffic.  he must have been right in the middle of the lane when the semi reached him, and i missed him so narrowly that the turbulence from my car tossed him around a bit, and into the safety of the shoulder.   i was stunned that he made it across.  i don't know how the little guys do it.

I have these in the pond. They come for food sometimes when I feed catfish.

I too move turtles and have stopped on many occasion to help them out. Feel bad for the guys. They just like to take it easy and a road is the last place they need to be. I also did not realize that a snapping turtles head could reach and snap as far back as it does :O Almost lost a finger one day trying to help one. First time that I had ever seen one and glad I didn't learn the hard way!!

Just grab snapping turtles by the tail.  It's strong and you won't hurt them picking them picking them up by the tail.

I recently stopped for some ducklings and their mom. I watched them cross the street, and the mother walked over a storm drain grate. sure enough, 4 of the ducklings fell through. I managed to lift the grate and grab two of the ducklings and  reunite them with mom, but the other two that were still in there got scared and ran further into the drain system. I could hear them churping but they were too far along in there. :(  At least I saved 2....

I can only hope they made it down the pipe far enough to where it opens to the ocean, about 200 yards.

As a kid we lived in an area of lakes and wetlands so snappers were common.  My dad liked turtle so when we saved them it was usually for the pot. ;D

you just pop them into the microwave and make soup out of them in the shell.

When I first saw the snapping turtle, I immediately thought of the scene from Cool hand Luke...

Caught this nice small mouth in the BWCA.  It was to late for supper so I put him on a stringer in a shallow little pool among the rocks so we could have him for breakfast.  Nothing left in the morning and I saw a big snapper in the shallows. ;D

+1 to that -- a big one (prob 18" long) washed up in the parking lot at my old job after the creek flooded.   my boss was a big huge ex-army guy but he wouldn't touch the thing.   i laughed at him and he bet me $100 i wouldn't pick it up.  easy money.   8)
