Need a 550 rear wheel measurement...
« on: June 28, 2012, 11:58:08 AM »
Tried this in the general forum with no luck...

I'm having bearing carriers machined for my race wheels, and sent the cush drive out of my stock rear wheel to the machinist hoping he could incorporate it into the machined carriers. I forgot to measure the sprocket offset from centerline before sending it though. Does anyone have a stock 550 wheel and the ability to take this measurement?

Tell me how exactly you want this measured and I'll give it a go.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Wheel centerline to inside mounting face of the sprocket.

thanks!

I'll do that on the morrow.
The most accurate I can get with a tape measure is 90mm.

They're interchangeable, so I'd sure bet so

The years matter.  I believe all stock 500, and most '74-'75 550 wheels were the same, the ones with flat brake plates.  Pretty sure that measurement will be different from flat brake plate wheels to ribbed brake plate wheels.

Measured more accurately now I'm sober.    ;D  Still looks like 90mm to me.

The F models have different axle spacer widths than the K models.  I haven't made any measurements, though.
I got the impression the swing arms were different, too.  Again, didn't take measurements.  I just keep the assemblies together as a unit.

Ahh, well its a 77 F model wheel... which I don't have to measure. I was hoping my K would be the same.

TT, it's the same bike as yours actually, the candy sword '77. Any chance I could get you to grab a caliper and pull that measurement for me?

Wheel centerline to inside mounting face of the sprocket.

So, I tried the measurement on my 1977 CB550F.  Not so easy with the bike assembled and chain on the sprocket.
I measured between the inner flanges on the hub where the spokes mount.  50 mm.  I expect the rim center will be at the 25mm point.  I didn't verify actual tire center line, but assume it is same a flange midpoint using spokes of same length side to side.

Then, I measured from the sprocket mount side to the inner sprocket flange (trying to eliminate parallax error since they are on different planes).  60mm  (I doubt this is hub center, fyi.)

That would make it 85mm from wheel center line to sprocket flange mount surface.

I didn't check my other Fs or Ks.

Haha, well that puts my 87mm that I got on my 76 F right between you two fellas. Wacky!

Well I'm at a loss. I'm sure plenty of these hubs have gone in custom framed or otherwise tinkered with race setups, and chain alignment I'm assuming is pretty important. How do you guys think I should proceed?

I make stuff and when in doubt I make it to the long side. So i'd make it 88mm. If it really should be 85 or 90mm it will be close enough.

Even with the correct dimension I like to run a string or straight edge along the sides of rear to front wheel and center the front with chain adjusters. Then I look for signs of chain wear on either side of the sprockets and adjust dimensions, repair, straighten parts if necessary.

Make it fat , like he said.. easy to clock in a piece within a thou, then machine some off later , if needed. Or change your wheel spacers.
If you are within a 32nd..or 3/4mm, you are fine anyway..
