corroded gas tank bung
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:20:34 AM »
I've been getting all kinds of great info here and just posted my intro in the newbs section. I have my first zinger here and would love some ideas. I took my '78 CB550K gas tank to be dipped to strip rust, paint, and an old liner inside. Came out great! But after I got it back home and was admiring the bare metal, I noticed the threaded outlet bung was corroded. And to top that the nut that joins it to the petcock is loose now, as in it no longer threads on to it. I figure my options are:

1. remove and braze on a new one (whatever that is, threaded pipe?)
2. use some JB Weld to permanently attach the adapter nut to the corroded bung
3. try to re-thread the bung (don't think that one is going to happen)

Has this happened to anyone else out there after have a tank chemically stripped? I know it's fixable, any ideas?

And thanks!!

Does the nut catch any threads at all? If it wasn't too bad I would try plumbers tape.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Yeah, it touches but I wouldn't say it catches a thread, only slightly. I thought about something like plumbers tape or teflon tape. I just don't know how those would hold up to exposure to gasoline.  Here's a pic of what it looks like now.
