78 cb550 oil filter
« on: June 30, 2012, 05:46:24 AM »
Hi all. I have a question concerning my cb550 oil filter. It has a conventional spin on type oil filter(like a car) but my friend picked up a filter from the Honda dealer for me and it was a drop in style(no metal casing, just the paper) and I saw someone selling an oil filter bolt for a cb550 on here. So what one is correct?

First off I have a 750 same year. Mine has the cartridge type and I think yours should also. So any way here is a bump maybe a 550 guy will see this and confirm.

thanks for the link! yeah i did a quick search of my bike and from what i can see it should have a filter housing. i didnt see any with a spin on style. so with that, i think ill just stay with the spin on style instead of buying all new parts. maybe someday ill change my mind

Someone has converted yours. I have read pros & cons about spin on filters I have one for my bike but have never installed it. Two or three people on this site that I trust have said it is not a good idea so I stayed with the factory setup. There are a few post on this. Use the goggle custom search under the orange home buttom and type spin on oil filter.

If it is the same one I have it is a WIX 51390. It is a black filter. Drain your old one and take it with you to WallMart to match it up the oring end needs to be the same. They make long and short. So make sure it will clear your pipes if you go with a long one.
Hope this helps

One more thing they make a chrome one. This is for a 750 but I think it will fit a 550.
