Author Topic: Replaced brake now it's making noise (Read 3559 times)

On my 76 cb550 I replaced my rear brake pads and used different springs and put it back together. Now the there is noise coming from the hub every time the wheel spins and I pull the clutch I can really hear it. Did I not grease something is the tension not right?? It feels like it is really tight in there so I don't know?

Are you sure it's not the drive chain?
If the sprockets are not aligned it gets awfuly noisy.

Quality control on replaement shoes leaves a little to be desired.

I've seen the sides of them rub on the spinning hub. Pull it and look for rubbing marks.

Ya your right this is a headache I will pull it i am greasing it also because I forgot to do that I need to at least grease the axle right? I think the axle is rubbing on the hub?

NO do not grease the axle. The axle doesn't turn and the only thing that does turn on the axle are the inner bearing races which do not need grease at the point they contact the axle. The axle should go in clean and dry. If its rusty or coroded dress it lightly with some emery paper.

Okay if it is rubbing on the inside of the hub what can I do i don't feel any tension on it I mean I can move it in neutral easy

Just the very slightest rub of the side of the shoe on the turning hub may make a loud noise. To fix, you'd just grind/file the side of the shoe down a tad.

Full disclosure, this has not happeened to me first hand. This is a condition I've read about but never verified personally. Makes sense to me but OCICBW.

I'm thinking you did not get your shoes from Honda. So MC is more than likely correct.

It might be good to note, for others reading: I (and many others I'd bet) have installed non HM brake shoes with no problems.
Sometimes posts like this may lead one to think that all non HM shoes (or any parts for that matter) will always encounter problems. When in fact it my really only be a small percentage where errors are encountered. Yes?

Also I may not have installed the hub back correctly because there are two little arrows one on the hub and one on the little washer behind the brake clutch and they do not line up and my manual says nothing about this.

Brake clutch? There is no such part I know of.
The arrows show when the brake is worn. When the arrows line up with the pedal pressed, the shoes are worn down close to the metal.

O I see I meant the little lever and mine aren't lined up so that's good but it's still making noise and I really don't think it's the pads tubbing I'll check tonight but I think maybe it's because something is not lined up???

Well I can hear it very well at like 15 mph when I pull the clutch it make a clunk clunk noise every time the wheel goes around it seems like but it does not feel like it grabbing you know what mean I can move it freely in neutral.

you have chain/sprocket issues, your wheel is out of alignment, or your chain is tensioned incorrectly.
dont ride it until you fix it.

I never put the axle in dry. That is a recipe for future rust, imo.

It does need a very light, thin grease coating, just enough to keep oxygen and humidity away from the steel. That way, you don't have to clean rust off the next time you take it apart.

I think Fly hit the nail on the head. Is your rear wheel aligned? There are little marks on the rear wheel tensioners so you can make sure they are the same on both sides. If not your chain will not line with your sprocket and make some noise.

That's a good idea, I'll amend my position. My point being the axle doesn't need to be greased for the purpose of anything turning on it. But to avoid corrosion, yes I'd agree.

bboy - although you'll always get good advice here, my suggestion would be to take it all apart and reassemble. i'm relatively new to the whole motorcycle wrenching thing too, and whenever something wasn't right i'd take it all apart, look at the manual, and go from the beginning. figured out a lot of stuff that way, and it's good to make sure you understand how all the parts interact in order to troubleshoot.
