Thinking about buying this
« on: July 10, 2012, 10:25:10 AM »
A buddy of mine bought the below bike a number of years back with the ambition to fix it up.  Needless to say he lost his ambition and subsequently sold it.  Now the guy that bought it from him hasn't done a thing with it since he bought it and is looking to sell it.  Naturally they are giving me first dibs on it.  However, I really don't have the room for another bike build so if I were to buy it I would be looking to part it out to aid in helping offset some a little of the cost of my current build.

It is a 77K and has a clean VA title.  What would you offer and do you think I would have much problem parting it?

Here it is the day he bought it and the subsequent tear down.

As it sits now.  All of the smaller parts that aren't pictured are in the plastic totes next to the frame.

I would have sold the bike as a complete motorcycle.

But it is easier to move the parts around now.

Well like I stated he was going to restore it, but lost his ambition.  Plus he lives in an apt so that made wrenching on it tough.

Looks to me like a 77-78, or maybe just the tank?

I might be able to, but the bike is about 45 minutes away from me so it might be a little bit before I can get out there.

No worries then man. Im guessin a 77 seat would fit on my 78. I just like the flat seat compared to the step up of my 78. How much u looking to get for the seat?

I doubt he would go that low, but...

What would a titled frame and swing arm go for?

If you buy it can I call dibs on the headlight ears and front signals for like $50 shipped?  ;)
You CAN do great things...with enough beer.

Interesting.  From the first pictures I saw with it all complete my first thought was "rebuild the carbs, 3000 mile tune up, then quick flip."  Does the engine turn over?  If it does it's a shame it got taken apart.  So where it stands now it is quite firmly in the category of "basket case."  This means it is not worth much.   Most of the value in these bikes is not in stuff like the engine.  Most of the value is in the cosmetic stuff--tank, seat, chromed parts, exhaust, side covers, engine covers that usually get road rashed, nice gauges, etc. etc.  From the condition I saw I don't see you really making a whole lot parting this thing out.  What is the bike worth to you?  Not much.  The $120 figure might seem low but the bike was devalued once it was taken apart.  It's now a basket case, and basket cases aren't worth as much as a whole, complete bike that could be road worthy from a day's work.

If I take my bike to a painter and say I want the frame and tank etc. painted he might charge me $500 for the paint job, but he will tack on another $1000+ just for all the labor and specialty knowledge of taking everything apart and putting it together the right way.

Was it running before the teardown?

My buddy wasn't sure when he bought it since the battery was dead and he started to dismantle it before he put in a good battery.  I agree with you on the parts, but thought that since it does have a title that I could get the vast majority of my investment back from the frame and swingarm.  I am not looking to make a killing on the parts (truly only thinking a couple hundred at best), but if I could trade them for some parts or services I need I would consider that a fair deal.

Just a titled frame is a bit of a niche market.  You need someone who has an engine and title problems.  If it were me I would say stay away unless you can get it for cheap.

A titled frame usually sells easily for $100.

My first thought is that it looks too nice to part out.

That, plus you have to decide if you want to become a parts dealer. There is only so much time in the day.

Well I got a price from the seller.  I think it might be a little bit more than I am willing to spend.  He just wants to get his initial investment back.  If anyone is interested in it shoot me a PM and I will give you the info.  The price isn't that bad just more than I am willing to spend at the moment considering my other project.

Lol you can tell us the price you don't have to protect that info  :)

Everyone would like to get their initial investment back--too bad for him he devalued his bike.

Not protecting him just being respectful not to post his price.
