CB400F: head work in the frame?
« on: October 12, 2013, 04:44:30 AM »
Is the 400 like the 500/550 where you can work on the top end with the motor in the frame? Specifically, the head?
I think we need a valve job and seals. Do I have to pull the motor to pull the head?

You can remove the top end with the engine in the frame.

Why do you think you need a valve job?  Have you done a compression and a leak down test-those should let you know for sure if you need top end work...Larry

As bwaller said, yes, you can pull the head while the motor is in the frame.

At some point, if you want/need to remove the motor from the frame, it can be done without removing the sump or the exhaust studs. You will, however, need to remove the breather cover (on top of the cylinder head cover) and the oil filter housing. By laying the frame and motor on its right side, the frame can be then lifted off of the motor. It's all pretty easy.
