Hello from Fairfax, Virgina
« on: September 07, 2013, 05:37:11 PM »
Hi Folks,
Well, my son got me started thinking about restoring an old bike and here I am, a proud owner of a 13000 mile, running, 1974 CB550 Four!!  I've been biking since 1967 on my Dad's old 1947 Simplex ServiCycle and bought my first bike, a new Honda CB350 in 1973.  A few bikes since and I currently ride a 2002 Goldwing.  I retired this past May and decided that restoring a 1970's era bike would not only be a fun project but will,  hopefully with your help and encouragement, end with a great bike back on the road!!   I'm looking forward to being a regular here!!!

Hey, Nokesville is right around the corner.  I actually have a good friend who lives there.  Maybe we can get together sometime, share some stories and a beer or two!!

Welcome aboard. Still got the Simplex ?...or maybe a pic of it..

Unfortunately, I don't have pics of the Simplex.  Many years ago, my father passed away and my mother was afraid that the "old motorcycle" in the garage would attract a thief so she asked that we "get rid of it".   I was stationed in Germany at the time and couldn't take it with me so my brother donated it to a private motorcycle museum in Cincinnati, Ohio.  That was the last I ever saw of it.

I think a story is in order here:  When I was sixteen I found out that my dad had stored and "old motorcycle" in a garage in a neighboring town.  I decided to rescue it and brought it home and spent many summer days trying to get it running.  This was 1967.  Everything looked great on the outside, but the inside of the tank was rusted terribly so I just kept rinsing out the rust with water (little did I know that was a stupid thing to do) but I finally got the big pieces/flakes out.  I also cleaned the glass fuel bowl, added gasoline and finally got her running.  After replacing the inner tubes (I left the rotted old tires on the bike) the tires held air and I made few laps around the yard.  So far so good so I took off down the road.  Living in a very small Northeast Ohio farm town, we only had one police car and two officers and they found me riding about a mile from my house and stopped me.  I was sure it was because they wanted to see the bike and sure enough the questions and my answers started coming... Yep, 125cc single cylinder with two spark plugs... belt drive with a expanding pulley for changing ratios...  1947 Simplex ServiCycle made in New Orleans and used by paratroopers in WWII... (at least that's what my Dad had told me) ... Oh, an it'll do 60mph!!!  That last one was a bit of an exaggeration as I don't think it was go over 25mph downhill, but that's what I told the officers and that's why they said, "If it goes that fast you need a helmet.  Where do you live?"  That's how my Dad met the officers who escorted my home.  My Dad promised them that I would never ride the bike again without a helmet.  Since I didn't own a helmet, that kept me off the bike for the remainder of the summer!!! ;D

I'll be in Virginia first weekend in October for our  annual "honda prelude skyline drive meet".   What a beautiful ride it is come fall!
