my trip home from mods vs.rockers
« on: June 19, 2006, 11:32:09 PM »
i went up to chicago this past weekend with a couple of guys for the mods vs. rockers event. overall the trip was great. very glad i went. the return home was a little rough though. here's the highlights.

lost the front brake bout 50 miles into the 300 mile trip. seems that where the line threads into the caliper stripped out the threads                     in the caliper. anyone got a front caliper they can part with?

rained 3 different times. once so hard that we had to stop. i couldnt see anything. bad news with no front brake.

after the hardest rain, my bike wouldnt run right cause the pod filters were soaked. had to go the rest of the way with no filters.

i almost ran out of gas. i was rocking the bike to slosh the gas around and sputtering up the exit ramp.

lost my bandana that covered my face in the rain cause i have a half helmet, and rain feels like little needles in the face at 70MPH

one guy we were riding with did run out of gas after bragging all weekend about his 6 gal fuel tank.

all this on the most uncomfortable chopper you can imagine. took seven hours to get home from a five hour trip. now i'm not complaining. no crashes. no injuries. like i said the trip was great overall. i had a blast on the way there and all day sat and sat night. i just couldnt believe all that happened on the way home. thought it was interesting. it was the trip that wouldnt end.

cant wait for rockerbox in milwaukee. think i'll be taking the cafe this time though.

ah - the story i hadn't heard yet...sounds exciting to say the least - I had my own rain incident...riding back from downtown i rode through the ONLY RAINSTORM IN SAINT LOUIS while up on 55 (interstate) - plus the bike was having some mystery ailment where it would run for about 5 minutes and then stall out so i couldn't ride through the rain - i had to pull over and sit there in it on the bike on the side of the interstate.

good times.  ;D

Sounds about right  :)

The first long ride I took on my chop (300 mile day) the extremely bumpy road I was on broke my tool bag off the bike.  It sits behind me so Iost that without knowing & my insurance was in there too.  The speedo broke.  It was hot so I had my jacket partially unzipped & every once in a while the wind would kick up, get inside my jacket and rip the jacket wide open.

I didn't have any rain but still.

The next day I couldn't start the bike at all.  Turns out I had a condensor go bad as well. At least I made it home.  All in all a good trip!

SLT, thats sounds like an awesome trip..I'm jealous.  The most I've did on my chop is probably 150 miles in a day...I'm hoping to road trip up to Little Rock (from BatonRouge) sometime this summer...that would be about a grand round trip.  But summer time in the south u'r just about gauranteed to get rained on  :( .  I got rained on in Myrtle, and was surprised how well my chop did...I have pods also.  She sputtered a little but didn't die on me...however the hardest rain only lasted 15 min or so, and I wouldn't call it a down pour.

STL Rocker,  Sounds like you had just as much fun as i did!!
After rushing to get my 75 cb550k going after massive cosmetic surgery, 4:30 am rolls around on Friday night/Saturday morn.
I  decided it wouldn't be finished. It idled OK, but driving was a whole nother story. Bogging down and no power. ( i put on 4-1 open pipe exhaust, k&n pods, and 115 main jets in freshly rebuild carbs). Woke up in the morning (noon) and decided i had over oiled the filters, and i should advance the ignition timing alittle. IT WORKED!!! Bike ran GREAT, Sounded GREAT!!! So at 1:30pm I was off to the Mod Vs. Rockers 2006!!!
The bike ran great all the way to the city (40 mile ride), argued with the GF about loosing her in traffic on the way, plus it was hot as balls with the damn leather jacket she made me wear.... Ran in the the portarican day parade, held up there for a hour...
Couldn't find Delilah's bar (where the rally was at) because i left the directions at work... i killed the bike in traffic in the city, then couldn't get ti started because the battery had died. ( had been fighting a charging problem...thought i had fixed it...Guess not)
After kicking the #$%* out of it, it finally started. I got the show and parked the damn thing.
Walked around looked at the bikes. Yay. argued with the GF some more, My dad showed up. He always manages to get me in good spirits  ::)  (note the sarcasm).  Group ride was blast! I had never riddin in a large group of bikes before. It was amazing. We rode to the museum of Science and Industry for a group photo. On the way there the bike started to sputter, so i switched it to reserve and noted the milage. Asked a few folks if they thought I'd make it back, all were optimistic. So on the way back to the bar we are on I-94 north in chicago mayhem- traffic and the bike starts to sputter. OH #$%*!! I exit on the next exit to look/hope for a gas station. The bike dies and runsout of gas in some ghetto neighborhood like 2 blocks from a gas station. I push it there, gas up and then try to start the bike. I wont start. I kick and kick and kick and kick it. Finally it lights up. And Idles at like 5,000 Rpms! I figured it was just flooded and running rich and would settle down. BUT no. So here i am sitting at every traffic light in chicago on a bike with open pipes Idleing at 5K !!!!! So I'm so clever i decided to leave it in 1st gear and ride the brake and clutch to at least lower the rpms a little so i dint look like a F*ing idiot. (my clutch is old and needs replacement anyway) I finally made it back to the bar like 30min after every on else, Dehydrated, hot, drenched with sweat. Drank like 5 pintsglasses of water. then looked for the problem with this damn machine. TURNS OUT, either I forgot to tighten down the throttle adjustment bolts on each carb or they made their way loose, and fell off and the 3 out of 4 carbs were running way open! Sooooo I was off to find some 8mm metric nuts at 9pm ona Saturday night. Long story short(heh heh) after a 1 1/2 search i found them fixed the problem. tuned the cabs to ear. Got on the bike to go home and my GF tells me my tail light is not working, but my brake light is. NOW Its right around this time that i realize that my clutch is making funny noises and slipping quite badly. I want to take the interstate home because i dint want to stop at every traffic light, through the ghetto at 1 am on a bike that is for some reason idling AGAIN at 5k and on a slipping clutch for 40 miles. ARRRRRGGGG!!! stopped at a gas station to replace the tail light bulb, (of course that didn't fix the prob either).
I made it home going 45 mph in the right lane/ shoulder of the chicago expressways with no tail light, only to get home and my GF says, "your brake light stopped working just outside of the city too"
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love my bike :D

Sounds like this year's mods vs. rockers show for you just wasn't meant to be  :o
Hopefully next year I can "rally the troops" eariler and give time for everyone to get their
bike running. After going this year, and seeing how it all worked out, we def. need to meet up somewhere and caravan into the show..

Porsche - do you really have a 912??

wow, you are a glutton for punishment, aren't ya... ;D
no, really, that's a cool little car - I had a 911 targa for a while - what fun!

#$%* man - that's how my trip would have ended up being if i had been "brave" enough to try and come - the bike's only been running for a couple of days now and it seems like each day something comes up...I just had a three-hour lunch break thanks to a blown fuse!  woooohooo!

Ya man , thats me ! Small world  ;D
You know if those pics they took at the museum ever got posted anywhere ??
I still have those burns on my knuckles from that day. ::) A little shot of WD-40 freeded up the idle screw, and now all is good. Your bike with that 4 into 1 exhaust is what sold me on getting one for my scoot. I take it you are local to the area, so shoot me a PM whenever you wanna ride...

Stop taking three hour lunches at the local strip club and get that bike done !! ;D
