Yes, the '78 threw a ring. Despite everything being squared away, i lost power one day. Went to start her up after a cool down, no heat from number 3. That same day i went to change the oil pan gasket and discovered the ring in pieces there.

Maybe there is no worst possible damage just need to sort some things out.

So far it's only been stupid problems solved through simples fixes on this motor.

So I went to start her up today to see how she'd do on a cold start. Fired right up but very little heat from number 2. I switched the coil wires for 2 and 3 and there was definitely an improvement. Also, when I rev it, it almost sounds like I can hear the air getting sucked through my pods.

On that 78 engine did you tear it apart to actually verify that the ring was gone.Hard for them to fall out even when broke when they are still in the barrel. Lots of times a broken ring in the bottom end can be from somebody dropping it in there while working on it.

Well today i get to go fix it. It still idles fine, but again number 2 didn't really warm up. So i switched the 2 and 3 wires around and that seemed to earm number 2 right up.

Alright fellas. So I hit my timing with a tac-dwell meter today, did a compression check (everything checked out) and threw some 115 jets in it even though I'll probably settle on 120s'.

She idles fine and all the electronics are doing their job. When I come out of first gear I don't have any sputtering but I can definitely hear air and one cylinder isn't firing just right. I think I have identified the need for a carb sync as well as an air leak!

Didn't get a chance to take pics of my plugs today.

What I did discover was one of the wires from my points was loose inside my connections. Fixed that, and she fired right up.

Since I'm trying to figure my jetting, I threw 115s in there and moved my needle clips down one notch. Now she fires on all four beautifully on full choke but dies down when I pull it out. I didn't have enough time to jack with my idle setting or anything else.

Do I move my needles back to their original position or do I need to fiddle with something else?

Pretty hard for us to make any recommendations on jetting changes without any info to begin with....

Another "i have pods"  and it runs like sh1t thread, why am i  not surprised... And by the way, you can hear the "air" induction quite loudly when running pods..

ITT: Forum members show their true colors.

I did neglect to mention I did check the condenser today. I apologize. Sheesh.

I pick the bike up tomorrow morning, so I'll have time to play with screws and needles and maybe, if you're nice, I'll post pics of my plugs. ;)

You're right. I apologize for being a bit terse. I lost both my bike AND my truck in these last two days so I'm in a less than amicable mood. Plugs tomorrow.

If I had to live in Nashville, Tennessee, I probably wouldn't be very nice, either. Two weeks there strained my patience to the limit! :(

Great news that you found a wire that could (probably) be blamed for the poor running!  Hopefully that was the main issue that started your thread.

As to your jetting question...

I find it impossible to make accurate assessments on mixture changes when changing more than one thing at a time.  I'd recommend going back to the previous settings on the needles while trying the larger mains.

You described earlier that the bike ran relatively well at idle and part throttle, or lower speeds.  That tells me that the needles were not wildly out of ideal settings.  The concern about leanness at full throttle remains, which you are addressing with larger mains.

Once you've got a feel for how each change effects it's metering circuit relative to the rest of them, then you'll be more confident about how to assess the system.

All the best

Shane
