Little twin eratic idle - driving me crazy
« on: June 26, 2012, 06:28:03 PM »
A guy brought me his CB175 to get running after 30 years of sitting. Only had 1100 miles on the clock.

I did the whole deal we've all done - and this thing WILL. NOT. IDLE. I'm about to pull my hair out. Is there a known culprit; is it common on these little twins? Hopefully you'll know more about them than me.

The idle is eratic - one minute its purring at 1k, then without touching the throttle will jump to 3k. Maybe goose it a little and it goes even higher, 5k, 6k, 7k... then back to 1k.

If anyone else ever runs into this...

you can't swap the slides around, there is a left and right slide. The cutaway faces the airboxes, if you mix them up they'll face forwards. I'm surprised they even fit backwards, there's a tab in the 550's carb bodies that would prevent that.

Didn't snap any pics, just remember to make sure the cutaway faces the airboxes. Other than that the carbs were really easy to set up. I think I did 1 1/4 out on the idle mixture, and around 3 turns on the idle speed adjusters. Float height was 21mm. Syncing was as easy as pulling the airboxes off, eyeballing the slides and making sure they raised at the same time. Adjustment was made at the top of the carb. That was it for carb tuning.

Airleak somewhere- carb boots etc- spray her with carb cleaner and jiggle your carbs a bit- bet she revs up 30--40 year old rubber tends to loose some of its plyabilty over the years-   also check and make sure pilots are seated properly
