The "L" shape isn't that obvious in the parts illustrations, but explains it well.
Appears to be a significant difference in design between the 75/76 and 77/78 years for some reason. The later year models appear to be more of a 4/2/1 affair instead of 4/1, and appears to be more "flat" than "L" shaped.
I remember reading somewhere that the stock F headers were pretty efficient, and thought they may breathe better than the MAC, but I'm unsure which design they were talking about.
