see alot of people without helmets now that they passed the new law
seems to me 99% of them are on cruisers
wonder if anyone has ever done a poll about the bike you ride and your stand on helmets

I'm in Michigan, and although I'm repulsed by the Governor, I'm glad it was finally repealed.. on my CB, I've be going Hatless a lot.. I know, stupid, but I've always hated helmets, especially the day I got heat stroke after a long ride! I will admit, I just got a Shadow, and I'm a little leary about going without on that! It's a big fat girl, and my CB feels like a minibike in comparison!

When the deaths related to going helmetless start piling up as the have here in Fort Wayne, maybe someone with common sense will see the error of their ways. Or maybe when that rock hits someone in the grill at 55mph and they need stitches to seal the wound or new teeth. Everyone has an opinion but for me atgatt. We have some friends that wrecked on their Wing and haven't been the same (health wise) since. Both were not wearing their helmets, now since their wreck, all their riding buddies never leave home with out them on.

Almost always with a helmet on my CB 750 K6. The one exception - to the gym, about a mile from my house on a really hot day (today).

I have never ridden without a helmet except testing the bike on my street. In NY the helmet law was mandatory back in the 1970's. I would not feel comfortable without one. I went to full face when a neighbor went down low speed about a mile away with an open face. He now looks like he had a stroke, one side sagging. My cousin needs a liver transplant so non helmet states up his odds.

I'm with Bobby.  Testing a repair on my block is just about it.  I would add riding my CT70, but it never goes above 20, and also never off my block.  It is, after all, a '69.  And then there's parades.  I've done Rolling Thunder here in D.C. on Memorial day, and with the slow speed, there's not enough air to keep cool.

I feel weird when I don't wear a helmet. IL it is not mandatory to wear one. And there is a huge death/ serious injury ratio. If I know it is going to be so hot out I just take my car.
I can image for you guys in the country, rocks/pebbles and BUGS!! I have done a few back roads or country cruises. And my helmet gets FULL of bugs, small and large.

I only wear my helmet when i plan on crashing. The rest of the time I just watch out for the fools and chuckle to my self every time I avoid an accident because I was watching out for stupid people.

If you ain't watching out for stupid people, you are one of them!

People say, "just around the block" or " it's just a mile or two". A couple from Michigan were killed today 1/8 of a mile from my house just a few hours ago.  Someone made a left turn in front of them.  They were wearing helmets and still didn't make it.  Anything can happen anytime and a helmet gives you a better chance to make it home alive.

Motorcyclist killed on way to memorial for another biker who died in crash

By Pei-Sze Cheng, NBCNewYork.com

A motorcyclist was struck and killed by a fire truck in Brooklyn, New York, while he was on his way to a memorial for another biker killed in a crash one year ago.

The motorcyclist, 46-year-old Reginald Brown of Brooklyn, was driving westbound on Monroe Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant when he collided with an FDNY fire truck at Marcy Avenue at about 4 p.m., officials said. He was a block away from his home.

Witness Danae Grandison said Brown's body "flew off the motorcycle," and he landed in front of a beauty salon. He was wearing a helmet.

The fire truck from Ladder Company 111 was responding to a fire at 315 Nostrand Ave., caused when a 17-year-old boy set off illegal fireworks, officials said. The truck had its lights and sirens on.

Brown was taken to Woodhull Hospital where he died, officials said.

Tiesha Safford said she was "confused" by how her cousin, who was a careful motorcyclist, could have been struck.

"He rides his bike pretty slow so I don't know how he wasn't able to hear them," said Brown's cousin Tiesha Safford. "I don't understand."

Friends told NBC 4 New York Brown was going to a memorial for a friend who died in a motorcycle crash one year ago on Utica Avenue and Avenue D in Brooklyn.

"He said he was going to change his clothes, and we were going to link up to go to the memorial for a friend of ours," said friend Sidest Mahadi.

Brown was a stickler for rules, said Mahadi.

The teen accused of using the illegal fireworks was later arrested, FDNY officials said.

Wait a second!  All these years I've been wearing a helmet, boots, gloves and leather jacket in case of a wreck when all I actually had to do was just not plan to have a wreck in the first place?  Why didn't anybody tell me this before?! ::) ;D

I like having the choice.  Now that I am not as indestructible as I once was I chose to wear one....I would say 95 percent of the time.   I don't care to castigate someone who chooses differently.  On another thread it was said anyone who doesn't wear a full face helmet is stupid....so now it has to be the "right" kind of helmet.
When I was doing long cross country trips I would wear my helmet when required and when not required take it off if conditions were nice.  I was comfortable not wearing one.  One of the best memories of my helmet was having it strapped to the side of my bike filled with wild blackberries I picked in California.  :)  One night I was glad I was wearing it as I came through a low wetland area thick with bugs and had to stop at a gas station and use the squeegee to clean off the visor, the headlight, and even my jacket. ;D
I am sure I have many many thousands of miles without wearing one....high mountain passes.....winding coastal roads....wide open plains.....a wonderful experience....not one I would change or trade with anyone.  Probably would not do it that way now but I am glad I did it and made it through in one piece.    The only serious accident was being hit by a car and I was not wearing a helmet.  Didn't smash my melon but broke a collarbone and wrist.  Some would say I was lucky....me, it's just something that happened.  I did start wearing one more often after that though, a wake up call I guess you could say.
Now the thing that really bugs me is those squids with the young girls on the back in shorts, tank tops, and flip flops.  Or maybe it's just the young girls..... ;D

Been riding since 1971. I have crashed many times and was wearing a helmet every time.
Raced motocross since the mid 80's, crashed alot, was always wearing a helmet and full gear.

If you can't go out and ride in a safe manor and watch out for idiots at the same time, then by all means, wear the gear.

helmet or no helmet, the real problem is motorcycles. They are the things that should be outlawed. Obviously there are people riding them that haven't got a clue and need to be protected from themselves.

So it's a black & white issue then?

Can't I ride in a safe manner and watch out for idiots at the same time all while simultaneously wearing safety gear?

Great logic Scrap. Been riding all my life, bike was my only form of transport till i got a car license at 40, had one accident, was hit from behind in the rain and left for dead in the bush for 7 hours with a fractured scull, broken jaw, badly broken left arm and a lacerated liver {i was 18 years old}, i am an extremely aware rider, even been a motorcycle courier in Sydney city {mayhem}, you can't see everything all the time, anyone that rides a lot knows that. ....

Of course it doesn't make sense to you. You feel safe wearing your superman outfit and don't feel safe without it.
You need to wear your helmet, that is fine I understand.

I don't recall anyone saying anything negative about wearing gear.
Wear it if you want, leave it at home if you want. You are free to decide, let me be free also.

I couldn't agree more.  I choose to wear safety gear, but I want it to remain a choice for everybody.  Your statement just came across as saying you can either ride safely, or you ride with safety gear, not both.
