Hey,

I have been putting my 78 CB550 K back together and have been having one problem after another : ) But I'm having fun right! I have put my newly powdercoated wheels back together and have a question on the rear. The bearings are in, and I have assembled the wheel per the clymers manual. Once completely assembled I seem to have a little, very little play on the rear sprocket and the aluminum piece that the sprocket bolts to. I believe the bearing is completely seated and I have hit the heck out of the retaining ring.... Is a little play normal?

for me. I needed to beat the sprocket on the powdercoat takes up just enough so the sprocket doesnt seat properly also can cut off PC with razor blade. Me I wouldnt ride it until its tight

The sprocket itself is not loose. It is the drive flange which the sprocket is attached to that has a little room to move. The wheel bearing is seated on the inner race, and the bearing retainer is seated against that bearing, however there is still a small gap between the bearing retainer and the drive flange. Any other ideas?

So I went ahead and disassembled the wheel again and pulled the bearings out. I believe what is happening is that the bearing that I have installed (new) is just a smidge too tall. Without the bearing the retainer collar screws down and everything is tight, with the bearing it stands up about a 1/16 of an inch. The wheel bearing in question has a part number on it of 6305NSE and was ordered from bikebandit. does anybody have any experience with this? I searched around but found nothing...

I can't ascertain exactly what you are talking about.

Review this to ensure you have all the required parts:

Then either post a picture showing your perceived issue.  Or, refer to the parts list numbers to indicate where your issue exists.

Hey, thanks for the response. This is the fiche that I have been going off of.

 My problem is with the bearing (#26) and the retaining ring (#3). This fiche is misleading because the retaining ring actually goes after the final drive flange (#8). Without the bearing everything seats fine and the flange is tight. With the bearing in all the way the retaining ring (#3) sits up on the flange about 1/16 and the flange has a little wiggle room.

Is this clear as mud?

It's been 10 years + since I had my 78 Rear wheel apart.

I looked at my Fiche for the 1975 CB550F.  I think it has a better orientation/association of components.  I don't know if there is a specific oddity/difference between the F model and the 77-78 K models.  I had assumed no, but could be wrong, I suppose.

Anyway, for your parts list reference, I will ask if you have #9 and #10 in place when you tighten down #8.

Did you compare the old bearing width to the new bearing width?

Just fishing for answers, I guess.

Check it against the other like TT said if they are the same I would think it is not seated. The 6305 sounds right not sure about NSE Is this a single seal?

Yes, its a single seal. Not sure about the width.. I'm not sure if I still have the original bearing unfortunately... I tore down the wheel months ago and may have pitched the destroyed bearing.

I can see that it's seated so it must be a little wider than the old one. I don't get it as this is the honda part number for the bearing that I need.... ugh. I can't believe that noone else has had this issue....

I've been doing some research and am thinking now that the rubber rear wheel dampers (#4) may be worn.. Could this cause my drive flange to rock a little bit?

I had the same problem, and found this thread when I searched this forum:

I tried something similar to what he did, but have not road tested it yet.  I didn't alter my wheel, and the bearing is fully seated, I don't know why there is a gap now between the drive flange and the retainer.
