For sport touring, maintenance needs to be easy. Note: the oil filler, filter, drain and site glass are all within inches of each other. The engineers worked hard on that.

Nice.

My little Ninja 250 is pretty easy like that.  It's better in that the filter is on the very bottom of the motor - much less mess.  But it's worse in that it's a pleated paper element - not as convenient as the spin-on.

My son's XR650L dual-sport is VERY aggravating - the filter is located high up on the side of the motor, on the side away from the kickstand.  So, when you go to change the filter, oil dribbles all down the side of the motor, drips on the frame rail and runs both forward and back along the frame 'till it drips off both in front and in back.  What a stupid, messy design!
