Pulse generator marks replacement on my Honda XL250S
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:33:21 PM »
Hi everyone...I needed to replace the pulse generator on my '79 Honda XL250S.  The manual says (pages attached) that "the mark on the pluser generator needs to aggree with that of the advancer rotor.  Failure to do so will result in poor engine performance"...which is pretty much what happened after I replaced.

From the pictures, anybody got an idea on what this really means?

I mean, I put it in identical to how the old one was oriented and doesn't the advancer rotor spin or move up and down, how can it be oriented to the stationary pulser generator?...any help or thoughts is appreciated...thanks!...ron.

Hmm....  you're right about the rotor spinning, etc.

Maybe that mark is more of a manufacturing mark, like, two different 'brands' might have been available.  One with the little "pac-man" mark as shown in the dotted circle, and a different one with a different-shaped mark.  And maybe they're not interchangeable...

Or, maybe the generator looks like it can be detached from the half-moon shaped mounting plate.  Maybe the mark serves to 'orient' the whole assembly.  Or, in that picture, it looks like the generator is adjustable (the slotted bit just visible in the picture) and the marks serve to orient it all.

That's about all I can come up with...

Good luck with it.

Great thoughts Kirk, thanks.

when I open her up again i will at least check that the marking symbols match to confirm/reject the first point...it's might be it, as the manual uses a funny word "agree"...i.e., that the marks should agree...not align but agree...hmmm.

...and then on the adjustable part...I looked at the new piece (an NOS replacement part right out of the bag), and it looks like their is locktite of somekind on the screws holding the little black box in place on the slotted portion of the mount...makes me think why'd they do that if you're suppose to adjust it and why no directions then in the manual?...weird...so i left it alone but boy, that makes the most sense when you see that part so its confusing and I'm still obviously not sure.

I'm quite sure I oriented the part correctly although that too could be all the mark is for...but the bike is running not in top form after replacing this part...BUT, I've replaced alot parts after running my girl into a swamp and having to dug her out for 2 days...first time she's running again in a year...yeah...any more thoughts please pass them on.
