Salt Racer CB 750 OZ style

Hi Gents,
 this thread is dedicated to Bears legs, hope they get to kick some butt one day Bear. This bike will have a long seat so someone big can fit on the back  ;D ;D ;D

Goal : 8)
To put a sohc honda in the record books at the Dry Lake Racer Australia annual speed week early in 2013
Class selected is M/F 750....... why ? cos it dont have no record set yet and  everyone loves a winner baby.
Its getting time to be busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking competition.  ie do some work and not just planning.

I'll role out some pics to celebrate the start, you will also see how much needs to be done :-\ :-\ ::)

Here is the pile of very old mostly stuffed parts,  An F  frame and two K2 engines. I spent the Saturday morning pulling one donk apart and am enjoying the easy bit, very nice. ;D

The two wheels and front end is off an XJ 900 yammy, went for the Yammy wheels as cost nothing, my son donated them to the cause.

Over the next week I'll continue to strip the engines down and clean up bits to see what Ive got.
I had a couple of heads and barrels vapour blasted last week for another project , done a sensational job but cost me approx $90 per part, so I thought stuff this,  I purchased a bead blasting cabinet and hopefully it will pay for itself by the end of the project.  I prefer the beaded look to paint and when assembled I brush the whole beaded engine with two stroke mix.  It kind of looks like the old Ducati crankcases, turns me on.

The old frame was off a scrap pile, given up for dead. All the oxidising will lighten it beautifully, the swing arm bolt was seized badly but I ground off the nut end as it was burred from someone else trying to get it out and used a big momma impact gun to beat some sense into it. out she come and I found a replacement on ebay last week.

For me it doesnt matter but if Peter gets a ride I better make sure its straight, I purchased a u beaut laser gadget for aligning the chain and it projects a line not a dot so I'll adapt that to use for checking the frame angles.

These are the carbs, pair of 40 DCOE on a RC Engineering manifold, If you read this doc the optional longer intake trumpets are 50mm with 25mm in as standard, will be OK to try both and see what happens.

two types of head gaskets , I love trying things to find the best. The usual bits , I must say the 750 pistons are sooo small, got too used to the big boy stuff now the 62mm pistons are babies. ::)

On the bench is a Lockhart oil cooler and an extra deep finned sump , The weather can be extreme Jan / Feb / March  40 plus C  :-[ :-[ :-[  so just in case I'll fit em on for scrutineering , if not needed I,ll take em off.

I'm tuned in...........Is the timing for the record accomplished by a single reading or do you have to hold the motor at full speed for a mile or more....and then make a return run?

Well honestly I didnt know what the deal was ! Thanks for the prompt Den,  funny I grew up thinking all record attempts were timed 1 mile each way but just finished reading the good book which is based on the california lake racing regs, it goes something like this.

Short course 3 mile for up to 175mph  ( for me)
Long course 6 mile for over 175mph

Short course has 3 timed traps:
after the first mile from the start line, 1st trap is for entire second mile, 2nd trap is the first quarter of the third mile, 3rd trap is is for the entire 3rd mile.

The quarter mile in the 3rd mile is for officials to determine who stays on the short course and who goes to the long course.

There are two sets of records, one way timed over a flying 2nd or 3rd mile and a two way record with a repeat run within 4 hours.

I guess to get the job done Dennis I need 4 things to happen, first pass scrutineeering,   noone else to turn up and cut my lunch,   pass the fist qualifying run on my L plates and then the old girl survive a full noise run for 3 miles without me #$%*eing myself at the first sign of a tank slapper :-[ :-[ :-[.

yea that's right Johno ,but  Aussie's being Aussie's, they told us .. what do you want to do?, long course or short ,?  a lot of us  ran long , then pretty sure was 9 ml's ,..... flat maggot , .......show no mercy...one way only.....that was a few yrs ago , an may of changed now

 ;D ;D ;D full noise for 9 miles, I cant wait,  you got me pumping now Pete, whats it like on the white dirt ? does the bike feel like its tracking straight or are you aware of it weaving and moving.  Full load for a while so I better put the oil cooler on I reckon and I,m planning on using that new fangled ( for me) oil with phospherous in or something,  Valvoline Brand , not the synthetic stuff the conventional stuff, clutch friendly they tell me,
I'll take my favourite handlebars to bed with me tonight  ;D ;D ;D

J............a narrow tire-contact patch on both ends and a steering stabilizer kept my Triumph Cub salt-flats bike as steady as a road-racer..........but have yet to go over 90 mph on asphalt during practice and just short of 85 mph on the salt.  Building a motor to stay together at WOT for up to a minute is a new challenge for many motor-heads. I change my oil often and inspect for metal bits, aluminum slime, and anything out of the ordinary...........then I use it for mix in my chainsaw.

For most successful 4-stroke speed builders, torque and gear/sprocket ratios win rather than maximum rpms..........horsepower is a benefit of building for maximum torque.

 :) Hi Dennis,  any chance you could post a pic of your tiger cub , I wasnt sure what a cub was so I checked it out on the web tonight, was it fun ?  in fact if any of you guys have run on the salt or have some Bonny pics I would love to see some.  :D

 I think on the upper speeds the bike drift around a few feet, salt over here gets rfutted and rough.

the BUB section deals with the bike event but there are other sections relative to your build..good luck..
