Not getting any spark cb750k4
« on: July 07, 2012, 06:39:12 PM »
Hey guys I'm doing a trial run of my motor pre-wiring. I'm using my old points and coils basically just as they were on the bike when I got it.

I hooked the blue wire from points to the blue on the coils and yellow to yellow. I then gave 12v power from a battery to the two black wires coming out of the coils. When testing for spark I grounded the spark plug threads to the motor, cranked the starter and got nothing. Is there any other grounding I need to make sure of with the coils besides grounding the spark plug?

What else could it be?

Dirty points not allowing contact, try a point file or emery along with some electronic cleaner and recheck...Larry

Break out the multimeter! Check your coils and points.

I would check all grounds and connections. I just had an instance where I had loose wire in my connections that has baffled me for the last 2 days.

Did you ground the battery?

Never use emery file or sand paper unless they are burned. You can just slide a piece of copy paper through the points and it will help re polish the surface.
The points surface is a mirror polished surface when new.

If the surface of the points is all pitted I would just buy some new points and condensers. IF you can get the gap correct and the dwell right at the same time then you are ok.

If you just clamped on a timing light to a spark plug wire instead of grounding the plug you can see if there is a spark even when it is hard to see on the plug.
With the timing light it is very easy to see. That way you do not need to hold the ground of the plug on the engine and risk getting shocked.

Ok guys yes it appeared the points were dirty I had already busted out the multimeter. unfortunately I already hit them with some sandpaper before I read this. but at least I got contact.

Just verifying I don't need another ground except for grounding the spark plugs? right?
