Little Drain Hoses?
« on: May 11, 2005, 07:48:28 AM »
I have the nipples on the bottom of my carbs (75-550) for what would appear to have been drains of some sort, but no hoses.

Now, I would imagine that this is a bowl drain of some sort? There's a stain on the engine below where something (Gas I would assume) has drained once in a while.

Where can I get the proper size (I'd say 1/8" or so?) tubing to replace the drain hoses?

Do I really need it?

How often does fuel drain from those?

I picked up several feet of hose at the hardware store. They are about a foot long I would guess and drape down over the rear of the engine. This keeps any overflow gas from leaking on the engine, goes to the ground instead. I pulled the ends together in a cluster with some very small plastic ratchet ties. The overflow occurs if the float level is not set properly, or a float valve sticks open. Good habit to always shut off the petcock when you turn the bike off.. unless you have a later model with vacuum petcock control

In my cb750K1 there is a small plate in the back of the swingarm, where the overflow tubes (carburetors+battery) go through.

Yup...no battery tube either...but there's a nipple for one.

Ok, what type of hose should I use, you can't use just any generic hose as Gas will eat through a lot of stuff. Is there a website where I can spend something like ten cents a foot and get a fast 12 feet or so easily?

Always a good idea to run the hoses from the overflow outlets so that any fuel spills end up on the ground instead of all over your engine.  Just get fuel line in the proper size at any auto parts store, a couple of small zip ties and create a bundle of hoses (gathering them together about where they fall over the back of the engine and from there to the outlet end). Make them long enough to extend down the back of the engine, between the case and the side cover, and through the small metal bracket that you should see down there and then a couple of inches more so they stay in place.

Make sure the battery breather is long enough to clear the swing arm!

It wasn't on my son's CG125 and I have one severely corroded swing arm!

I was able to buy some hose from Honda -- not that you need it, but they had it on a spool...

It wasn't the same as original -- my thicker walled but I'm sure it'll work.

You'll need more than a foot each -- I asked the guy for 5 feet and it turns out the originals on my 650 are about 18 " each.

Welll, if you're into restoring it, I know Honda had the hose set for my CB550F for CAD$20.  You definitely want something there - doesn't take much to have gas come out of them, and you don't want it dripping all over your engine.
