my opinion on this is thus:

if you have enough internet to list an item for sale online, you have enough internet to find out what you're selling.

i remember in the early 90s when ebay 1st came out.  it was a great place to get cool stuff at garage-sale prices.  now it sets the fair-market-value of EVERYTHING, and people try and sell old stinky shoes as "rare vintage clothing".

people do this with cars all the time - they just sell them for "whatever", and people snatch them up guilt-free.  to me, if someone is going to sell something without researching it 1st, then their asking price is the exact value of what the item is worth to them.

I have to look at that bozo in the mirror every morning so...... I told her it was worth at least 10 times that amount. She went on about how her son never learned to play before he left for war and she also told me he never came home from that war. I told her thank you but I couldn't afford what that guitar was worth and even gave her information as to where she could sell it.
The karma gods patted me on the back and touched her heart. She gave me the guitar and only asked that I take care of it. I play that guitar everyday.

This discussion about the value of things and buying and selling is complex.
I think If I saw that old strat and knew its value was far more than the family knew  I would  treat that as a special case.

ON THE OTHER HAND is a 1957 strat really worth $10,000 dollars? c'mon

It's funny how every example of fiducial reponsibility/karma involves a "little old lady". 
I'm sure there's been plenty of buyers who have walked away having spent way too much for an item.  I highly doubt the sellers in those cases would object.  I don't understand how as a buyer it's your reponsibility to do your research and if you spend too much it's your fault but a seller is somehow immune to the rules of the marketplace.
If you were to somehow steal away an auction for a great price on ebay, are you obliged to send more money just because that item has sold for more than that on some other auction?  Who sets the price for these types of items?  If something has sold for a certain price in the past is that now the absolute value of that item?

If you have an issue with buying an item off a seller that is selling something too low then offer the extra money AFTER you bought it.

If they did not do their homework then they lose out on extra money, like Cvalero said nobody feels too sorry for a sap that pays too much for something. The same should apply to sellers.

Interesting debate going on here, my take on it is.

1.  Most aspects of what has been said is irrelevant.  Bankerdanny's motivation to inform the seller was based on his "not having squat" to buy anything on craigslist.  He saw something he wanted, was unable to buy it, and that did not sit well with him.  I fail to see the "good Samaritan" angle here as if he would have had the money, he would have bought it.

2.  The ad in the first place was probably fake.  How many bikes have you seen on a craigslist ad that weren't poorly lit, low resolution, less than desirable angle, etc. etc. --good, clear pictures are few and far between and usually taken with someone's jitterbug or aging cricket flip phone.  Someone also astutely pointed out the nice manicured lawn and background.  This picture was pilfered from somewhere on the internet.

3.  No one with a 69 would ever do this.  Everyone with a 69 thinks they have a sandcast.  Everyone with a 70 thinks they have a sandcast.  If it's not a sandcast then it has "sandcast parts."  People don't even know what a sandcast is, but they are prone to think that they could have one and that it's worth a lot of money.

4.  And here is the bottom line.  Someone posted a fake ad about a bike on the internet to farm email addresses.  Bankerdanny donated one to the cause.  There was never any bike and BikerDanny made himself look selfish and spiteful and will be rewarded with more penis enlargement spam in his inbox.  The end.

You can give a gift to yourself and make payment for it.
If you pay for it and give it to someone else, it is a gift.  That's how I was taught.  Refusing a genuine gift from someone else is considered rude.

We all want to get a good deal, weather we are buying another sohc4 Honda, a new car, furniture, what ever it might be. We want what we want, but try to keep as much money in out pockets as we can. I understand what Banker is saying but than I don't understand it. He says, don't have money to but anything right now so I let the seller know he was screwing himself, but would you of done the same thing if you had some cash and was looking for another sohc4. Would you paid him what he was asking or would you told him to sell it to you for more. Here is the situation I ran into last year when I bought my 750KO. The bike was in fair to good shape, it ran, not good, but it ran. Almost all still original, still had ducktail seat and HM300 pipes in decent condition and still had the original KO wrinkled gas tank. I paid the owner what he was asking for the KO and he signed the title over to me and I loaded it up and brought it home. He was happy because he got what he was asking and he had cash money in his hand and I was happy, oh man believe me I was happy good deal for both parties. About a month later I hear through the grape vine that the guy was sick to his stomach and mad at himself because after the fact he did some checking around and found out that his KO was worth a large chunk of change. Much more than what he sold it to me for. Honestly when I heard this I felt bad and that I had took advantage of this guy. But the more I thought about it I said wait a minute, I paid him what he wanted for the bike and it wasn't might fault he didn't do his research until after the fact. Hey I got lucky and was at the right place and right time and got a deal on a KO.
