over tightened now in distress
« on: June 20, 2006, 01:08:06 PM »
I finally welded the hangers on the exhaust yesterday, and when I was reinstalling it i over tightened one of the nuts on the head (stupid cheep torque wrench).  The bolt pulled out of the head and after the bolt was out I could unscrew what I can best describe as filings out of the threads on the bolt.  The thing is after cleaning the threads on the bolt I could screw it back into the head and it seemed to fit pretty tight.  The question is can I still use this bolt with some epoxy or jb weld, or should I rethread the head and use a bigger bolt.  I do not know how hot the head and the exhaust header gets but if I can get away with using JB weld that would be great.  Tell me what you think All ideas are appreciated, thanks.

As far as heat and JB weld I can tell you that I used JB to repair some broken engine fins on  my 750 and it's held up to 2000 miles without a problem.

Personally, I'd be inclined to try the jb weld and see if it works.  If not, at least you're really no worse off IMO.
