I was putting the forks back on the K0 today, I removed the loose bolts and washers from the top tree and it broke in my hand. Went together easy and yes I have always had the D washers. Learned that lesson years ago on a K4.
 There was over an 1/8" of black powder coat in the break so it must have been cracked before.
 Not to worry, I have another polished one with my gauges already on it but that was dissapointing.

Wow, that sucks! :( It's not the first time I've heard of an early triple breaking, even with the D washers. My K1 never had them, and never broke. I wonder, was there a service bulletin on this? Where the washers added to correct the problem, just like the mods to fix the broken chains?

I don't think it should be fixed. I have another one that isn't powder coated I can use. I guess this is why they sell so well on Ebay. I lost track of which one came on the bike but I think it was the one that broke. So yes, I was riding fast and testing the brakes before I took it apart for paint. Braking is probably when it gets the most load and I was practicing emergency stops. Just how I roll lol.

I think the stock spacer is too thin. When I restored my K0 and picked up a new (old) top tree, I fiddled with spacers until I had enough to juuuuuust grab the fork as everything contacted. If you'll notice3, the original spacer is a washer with the side ground off. I stacked home-made spacers 'til I got everything just snug. I saved the old tree just in case I ever find someone who can repair it as a spare.

My 750 super sport came with no D washers, I was pleased it wasn't broken, the seller just slid it together good enough for me to roll it into my trailer. Fortunately I knew about them already. The washers weren't in the parts box though.

I have a belt sander, maybe I need some custom spacers too.

Don,
the 75/76 F's came with washers till serial number 2009780. After that they use a different top triple with NO washers.
Another way to tell is the earlier top triple pinch bolts are 8mm in diameter. The later ones are 7mm.

Good to know! I've been worried about my '78 CB750F having no D washers until I read this post.

By the way, this post might have title ever!
