must be a wee bit lean. i commuted today and throttled it good... it starts after its warm, i can get to speed and cruise, but at mid throttle it stutters, or misses.
Try raising the needle (lowering the clip) a notch and see if the mid-throttle improves.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Skam, your stuttering issue, plus the bone-white insulators point to a lean condition, IMHO. (waiting for someone to say "beam me up, scottly!  ;D)

I agree LEAN.

It is on the verge of seizing!

so i adjusted my timing and points,  headed for home, got on the freeway no brob, cruised at 60@5k ish.after 15 min, after the offramp, throttle back up and way less of the issue, but still some issue. i had some hesitation at 1/3 ish throttle and at 3k cruise, 3/4 to  wot it and it straightens out. have i reached the 550 flat spot? it just feels waaaay different after the rebuild

Looks like about pic#23 on the NGK chart.

But, they should all be the same and it looks as though #3 has more deposits than the others.

don't try to tune with pre-concieved notions of what has more or less back pressure...it won't work.   A short open header can have more back pressure than a proper long baffled exhaust...back pressure is really all about resonance and nobody has really figured it all out for 4 strokes
If it works good, it looks good...

dave....it runs poorly though. it gets lurchy when i accel, which im not fond of on corners. if i blip the throttle it hangs on the highr rev for seconds. i dont want to melt my block or be all surgy. the only difference between then and rebuilt is the edited exhaust. it ran quite well for how much oil it left everywhere, but was LOUD. cb750 no baffle mac 4-2 bells.now its capped with kz650 reverse megaphone w/ baffle. ive set my air screws to 1.75 out, testing that soon. then maybe needle clip if it persists?

the solid type offer more control over a lean out, heres a couple i soldered up.

try and find some soild ones or solder yours up,or a spare set so you have both,,the hole type dont let you enrichen the idle/off idle for smog reasons or some #$%*,get hold of some spares and try it,with the hole type even fully closed they pass air,,all the talk about how many turns in or out dosent matter its a per engine thing,,not many have mentioned about the hole or non hole screws so people counting turns may as well be counting sheep.

do one modification at a time,if you feel you need to you can un solder those screws,,i always run solids, its a bit like those old idle screw limiter caps on old smog 80s cars carburettors,,you got piss all of a turn to tune with.

Ok....rebuilt oil pump, recleaned and adjusted carbs..100 mains, 38 slows, btw. #2 had white corrosion and the floats had white dust and looked dry as a bone. Cleaned float needles. Might have been the issue. Tests tomorrow
