source of fuses
« on: June 21, 2006, 11:52:03 AM »
Howdy, I've searched the forum and gotten a lot of info on fuse problems, but my problem is just finding a source of the 5, 7, and 15 amp fuses for my 78 750K. The auto fuses I can find around here are a bit longer than the fuses in place on the bike. And, anyway, I can't find 7 amp fuses of any sort (lots of 7 1/2s. Can you suggest a source for these motorcycle fuses? Thanks

I walk into my local Cycle World (bike dealership), belly up to their parts counter, and ask for it.

If you can get fuse wire from a DIY shop you can melt the solder at the end of the glass tupe on the metal caps with a soldering iron and just put new wire through and soler them back up..... recycling is cool  ;D

I think you can get them from Radio Shack online

I did find mine at a Murray's Discount Auto. They had both the 1-1/4 in and 1 in. sizes, just had to look a bit.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Thanks for the suggestions. Local auto parts store here have no 7 amp fuses. The 5 and 15 amp fuses they have are 1 3/16 " - 30mm, and the fuses in the fuse holders on my 750K are 15/16" - 24mm (and fit perfectly). The local Honda dealer/service/shop had none and acted like they had never seen such a fuse before. I did find a 7 1/2 amp fuse, 20mm at the local dirt bike and Harley shop. It's a bit short, but seems to be working. Got my headlight back on, at least on low beam.

Hi Wrenchless,

What you find in fuses depends not only on what store, but also your geographic location.

I have gone through the same thing you are doing right now.  I live in Phoenix, AZ, and I could not find the right fuses anywhere........ NAPA, AutoZone, Radio Shack, etc., etc.

If push comes to shove, checkout this link online.... they had all the fuses.... the right amps and the correct lengths, for my 750 K4 it is one inch.

    Good luck,

You can use the 15 amp fuse in place of the 7A til you find the correct 7A.  It will work fine. The only issue would be if there is a circuit fault in the headlight wiring, it's a toss up if the main or headlight fuse will cook off first.  You'll still have circuit protection.  It will just be more interesting to troubleshoot faults.
