Still marking it's spot. Ideas?
« on: July 02, 2012, 10:30:31 AM »
So, I read and read, and fixed and replaced, but I am still leaking oil on the 74 350f. I've replaced all of the O-rings on the oil pump and the shifter shaft seal (Which I think I did correctly, it seemed a little too easy.)

Alas, I am still leaking oil from the oil pump. About 2 drops every 5 seconds while running in neutral. It seems to be coming from the lower-left cover on the main oil pump unit and also the lower-left cover o the gear-housing. It still will not let me post links to show, I will get a picture up if necessary though.

Is this a acceptable amount of oil leakage? It is the original engine, but only has 25k miles. Could it be that the oil pump is not level on the base? Am I missing something? Maybe, should I just ignore it and carry a quart with me when I travel for a couple days? Im trying to get this bike up to snuff for trips from San Diego to San Francisco and this is the last piece of the puzzle that is troubling me.

You mean out of the oil pan? Might just need new gaskets

I smear a light coat of three bond on the oil pump mating surfaces to keep it from leaking.

When are you coming to SF?

It is also leaking from the oil pan, but that isnt what I am concerned with. I know I just need new gaskets there.

I was thinking of putting a very light coating, but I didnt want to mess anything up without hearing of someone else doing it first. Im coming to SF as soon as possible. I just need to get it running right and find some sort of sissy bar+luggage rack for the girlfriend.

and then of course, get about a week off of work.

The engine should not leak any oil on the ground.

You keep saying "oil pump", is the thing that is leaking the actual oil pump?

Just a paper gasket and use Gaskacinch  on each surface.  When the Gaskacinch is dry then put it together.

Lumpy old gasket sealer could cause a leak.
You need to clean the surfaces perfectly, put on new gaskets and put it back together.

Can you post a photo?

It is leaking from numbers 1 and 2. I know this is the "oil pump", but I dont really know about the specific parts of the oil pump. It is leaking a wee bit from number 3, but its minimal. Also, what is #3 called? I looked, but Im still a little confused on what part that is and why it would be leaking.

You mentioned gaskets. There were no gaskets when I first took it off, so I assumed there were no gaskets there. Should there be?

i've been going threough the same dilemma. on my pump, which is slightly different from yours (1980 cb650) the outer cover of the pump was leaking. i removed the cover and the large o ring that was there crumbled to dust. i had assumed it would leak where it attached to the engine, but the leak was weeping from underneath the pump cover.

Well, I replaced all of the o-rings (again) and put a minimal amount of Three bond around the edges of the oil pump. I also replaced the shifter seal and that seems to have stop all of the leaking from those areas. The problem now is the oil pressure switch.

If I am following the leak correctly, the pressure switch is leaking onto the wires and following them down to where they are outside the left crankcase cover and then wind is splashing the oil all over my shifter and my shoes. We're talking enough oil to cause a slip if Im not careful. I checked the shifter seal again and it seems to be fine with no sign of a leak, so this is my only idea at this point. Anyone else have other ideas of how oil is puddling on my shoe?

clean it completely... and then spray on some aerosol foot spray (the powdery kind)
Start it up and it will reveal the exact source of your leak.

+1.  When I was chasing a leak I thought my entire bike was going to be covered in foot spray.  If you do use it don't over spray it. It looks like it is not going on at all until it dries-it takes a moment- but once it dries it is white!

The oil pressure sw. is not that expensive just get a new one and be done with it.
