Carb Rack (cb650c)
« on: July 09, 2012, 07:50:33 PM »
I have a 1980 cb650c, what is the best way to put the carb rack on? I usually put the carb isolators on the carbs first and then push them onto the motor, but is it easier to put the isolators on the engine first? Any other suggestions as to putting them on? I also smear a little grease on the boots to help them slide on too.

thanks

These are pictures of my CB350F however the carb install is the same for most SOHC4's.

I did this, too.  A ratchet strap to hold the airbox back, then a second ratchet strap around the engine to pull the carb rack on.  Be careful to wrap the strap around the mouths of the carbs so they seat in the boots, and avoid the exhaust if you can.

I place my bike on the centre stand, lube up the boots, sit on the bike without the seat or tank on it and hold the carbs in my hands place my knees behind my hands, feet on the pegs and push off the pegs with my feet and they pop straight on.  I leave the boots on the carbs, and just shove the airbox back, it is tight on my 79 650, but not as tight as my 82 nighthawk, but fairly straight forward once you have done it a couple of times. ;)

I've done it quite a few times, but always with some help. Now I have the bike up to college with me and I'm working on it alone and was just curious about how everyone else does it. I usually leave the boots on it the carbs and push them onto the engine. Just seeing if any others have a better way.
