Hi Sherlock, once the six bolts are removed the disc should just fall off, so yep seems its seized on. I'd give it a soaking in WD and lightly tap roound with a rubber mallet.

Cheers Ewan. :-)
I suspected this but wanted to be certain before I get the sledge hammer out :-0

Quick update:

I’ve been working on the front wheel. So far, the speedo drive gearbox is shagged along with the retainer/drive cog. The alloy hub has oxidised and fused itself to the disc so I’m looking for suggestions on how to separate the alloy hub from the steel disc.

Both forks have been stripped, new seals and oil replaced. I began polishing the tubes but one has some bad score marks which will need sanding out and then re-polishing.
The engine is stuck in the frame by the 2 lower bolts, no matter what I throw at it they won’t budge, I’m contemplating drilling them out.

The rocker cover and head have been removed and now trying to free up the mating surfaces to remove the block.

The rear brake pedal is seized solid in the frame, not uncommon but I’ve spent several hours, heating, beating and soaking the damn thing and it’s not budging.
Front wheel is badly corroded on the inner rim, not sure if it is salvageable, shame if not as it’s the original quality DID part.

Compressor ordered and should arrive today, will try and make a home made soda blaster to clean the engine (should be fun and very messy!!)

Frame (once the engine is out) will have all the brackets removed that aren’t needed and a “U” shape tube welded to the rear seat support, I’ve decided to go for rearsets using the existing riders foot peg mounts as the ones I’ve seen are set back about 2″. For me, mounting the rearsets on the pillion mounts is too far back.

Once the frame fabrication is complete it will be glass/sand blasted and powder coated gloss black, along with the rims, side stand and swing arm.

That’s it for now, stay tuned or visit the blog – http://www.acaferacerisborn.wordpress.com/

Finally separated the disc from the drum :-)

Can anyone comment on this rim. Surface rust on the inside is quite bad. Is it still okay to remove the rust / treat the rust and reuse? It is going to be painted/powder coated.

Why not swapping it for an aluminum rim.  Less rotating mass.

Degreased the yokes today, sanded down and painted. Also put the bolts on the wire wheel and a quick spin on the polishing mops.

I thought about using clip ons instead of clubman bars. Only thing is it leaves the handlebar mounting clamps. How can I overcome this? Would I have to grind them off?

Good & Bad day :-( :-)

Finally removed the engine from the frame :-). Snapped a long bolt in the process and found out these are mega £££'s :-(

Also found out the frame has a hole in it, well, a few... Which are (luckily) on the left pillion bracket so shouldn't have any effect on the frame itself.

Having spoke to someone, it would seem cutting this section out between the frame and the mounting point then welding an identical sized tube in its place would do the trick.

The other problems to address are:

Bolt seized in frame in the front middle engine mounting point.
Rear brake lever spline seized in frame.

Cut rear seat/fender mount off.
Weld new rear end and cross member support bracket

Grind off unwanted brackets etc
Remove centre stand (which appears to be stuck!

I got a quote of £35-50 to shot blast frame and swing arm and £80 to powder coat. Thought that was reasonable. Decided i'm going to get brand new rims as these are rusted to buggery.

So, any suggestions on removing the brake lever spline thingy?

Yikes.  Take a serious look at the rest of the frame rust and make sure the structural integrity is not compromised.

Yeah, that's what I said!!

Checked the rest of the frame and all seems well. Carried out a number (about 20) spot checks in areas that looked suspect. Used a dremel to grind off the 60 layers of paint and all suspect areas were okay. I'm going to get it shot blasted and hopefully that will reveal all.
If its just the rear pillion bracket I'd be lucky.!!

You can use a stock front rim on a GL1000 1975-76 which has an aluminum rim or buy a replacement. Here we have a place called Buchanan's that carries a good selection and also builds wheels.

maybe dip the whole bike in PB blaster for a day... at the very least, to free that caliper, use penetrating oil, and heat the caliper (not the piston).. it'll go eventually..

So far...

Frame is now naked apart from the bloody rear brake lever shaft. It's moving about 30 degrees with the aid of a hammer both ways but doesn't seem to rotate fully. I have tried using a pointed bar to tap it out but no joy. Still heating and soaking g in pro gas.

I also have a very stubborn front frame mounting bolt stuck in the frame collar :-(

Had a go at removing some of the exhaust studs. Got 3 out, snapped one :-( so still have 4 left and a broken stud.

Got the frame checked over by a local guy who's restored a few bikes in his time and says its fine. No bends, twists or misalignment and no rust where it matters. The only bit was on the rear fender/seat mounts (being chopped off) and lower left pillion bracket which can be cut out and re weld a new piece of tube in.

Getting there slowly. Be pleased when the frame has been fabricated, blasted and PC'd.

I gotta ask, how in the hell are your fork tubes so clean, when the rest of the bike is rust city?

I have no idea! At a guess I'd say they've been replaced at some time. Either that or the rubber seals inside the headlight ears did what they were supposed to do??

Having major trouble getting the oil filter off. PO cut a slot in the head of the bolt which I have tried using an impact screwdriver on but still not moving. Tried grip pliers etc.
The thread I believe is at the end of the shaft. Is there any suggestions how to get this off??

Aside my oil filter issues I managed to finally finish the carbs off. Cleaned, new jets, needles, gaskets etc and bench synched. Along with some pod filters.

Now sat on the shelf waiting to go!

Also got some goodies today

The frame is going for shot blasting next week along with the swing arm. It will then have the mods carried out and welding. Then finally off to be Powder coated. Then then the fun begins.

Oh and my replacement hub/wheel arrived from USA.

I will use the rim and hub but the spokes will be replaced and the rim powder coated.

Right, off to see the bank manager now. Lol.

Essential accessories for any bike builders garage...
