Jet Clogged ? Fuel Rail? Not pulling fuel.
« on: July 11, 2012, 06:53:56 PM »
Hi Guys, I just got my bike together after a carb rebuild and petcock rebuild. Tried to fire it up tonight and it wouldn't start. Shot a small shot of starting fluid in the airbox and it fired right up but of course died when the ether ran out.  I'm getting good flow from the tank and the bowls have gas.  could a needle jet cause this, i soaked the carbs in simple green, and replaced the float valves. I have no overflowing or leaking anywhere. i also replaced the slow jets.  would you guys replace the other jets or does this sound like something else? if it was a jet wouldn't it start and run but just run bad??  thanks in advance.

the bowls have gas.
How much gas is in the bowls?

Gas drains from the bowls when I unscrew the drain screws. And will fill back up.

I replaced the slow jets i think. The ones with the flat head slot. Don't have the book close by to look sorry.

Perhaps your fuel level is set too low and your idle jet isn't reaching the fuel? Did you adjust the float height? What value did you use and how did you measure it?

Yes, the jets with flat head screw cuts are the pilot jets.
fuel in your bowls should be at 4mm below the bowl gasket seam to be at the correct level for both jets.
Floats at 24mm will achieve this level.  Clymer's stated 21mm sets fuel too high.

I set them to 21mm, as Clymer's says.  But i used a tape measure, possibly they are too low.   I'll take another look tonight, and get a better measuring device.  I'm also going to go over the entire rack again and see if i can find any restrictions.   also the Honda carb manual states a bad tank cap can do this... I'll try and start it with the cap open.. if that's all it is.....wow...

Be sure to press out the emulsion tubes from under the main jets if you overlooked it last time. they need to be cleaned of old gas varnish and all their tiny holes should be clear.

Have you considered the clear tube method for checking the fuel level in the bowl??

Just wanted to give an update on this post.  Today i took the carbs off again, and totally cleaned them again, I took the emulsion tubes out and they were caked with junk. I also cleaned and put the original Honda Jets and air screws back in. I bench synced the carbs and when i started it, ..it fired right up and idled perfectly.  I rode it around a few times today and it was wonderful.  Thanks to all of you guys for the advise, i would have never been able to get this bike running without this forum... now on to tuning, a 3,000 and work some minor electrical bugs out....
